I was walking in the Atchafalaya Basin swamp at 4am this morning with just a 9mm pistol and a flash light scouting.

i have re-occuring nightmares about alligators. had them since i was young. not sure why either, never seen one in the wild. but its the same dream and same gator every time. those pics reminded me of it. scary. oh and you guys are nuckin futs for being near that damn thing!

I completely understand your point, you guys were raised in that environment. Here in the land of lofty pines and crystal clear Rocky Mountain water there are no gators lurking in the depths. THE SHIT JUST ISN'T RIGHT IN OUR WORLD!

There was a guy on ALDEER.com talking about the same thing happening to him this past weekend. He said he was duck hunting in about knee deep water. As he was moving up on some ducks and moving slowly he had a log move on him. Looked down and there was a gator it turned and looked at him from under the water. He slowly backed out. This was in Selma, AL.

We went back out yesterday wading the same general area where the big gator was seen. We didnt see any gators. I guess it was finally too damn cold for them. It was 15 when we started unloading the pirogues.

I'm not sure when gator season starts. I plan to check with LADWF soon to find out. As far as I know, WMAs don't have a gator season. I'll be checking on that too. I would love a chance a that big boy but I'll need a bigger boat.

If you or anyone you know goes to the Atchafalaya basin swamps, tell them there have been confirmed reports of bull sharks making that far inland. I was walking in the swamps there a few days ago and the game warden told me about it. He said if I spotted any, to call it in so they can post the sightings.

bull sharks normally live in open ocean but swim upstream in fresh water to lay their eggs, bull sharks have been caught as far north as st.louis. but now they are even in the swamps

Maybe we should invite some northern hide members on a hunt with us. We can guide them and show them that the swamps aren't really as bad as they think. lol We can find a small island in the Atchafalaya Basin to camp out on for a weekend. Camping, hunting, and fishing...... sounds like a great time to me.

This is what I walking in the other morning at 4am, LMAO. I think it would make for a good camping spot for us and our guests. There is a few dry places up in there and the deer are freaking HUGE!

just finished watching somethin on animal planet where some white trash kid was swimmin across a canal at night and was attacked. next day they pulled like an 11 ft gator out of the canal, cut him open and pulled the kids arm out. i almost threw up.

Our season is late September. Once it gets cool they stop eating. I am surprised that guy was out considering how cool it has been.
We have a little(5-6ft) gator in our beaver pond and I have not seen him since october.

beretta_man11, that's a helluva haul. I've only hunted swamp/ flooded timber or open water. I'd love to try some field hunting. It's totally different from any duck hunting I've done.

thanks KM. I have done a good bit of field hunting but I still prefer the flooded timber back home in MS.
These geese were killed in a field but the ducks were in a small "heated" pond. The oil company drilled a well getting oil and water, they seperate the two and the water comes out at 180*, trickles down the hill to these warm water holding ponds... the quackers didn't know what hitt'm!

I wouldnt mind visiting for some hunting those swamp critters are awesome. Although I might hafta bring injury to anyone tryin to take my thermacell. Those skeeters with tail numbers aint cool. But then again this time of year i guess that is a non issue.

You can bring what ever you like to fight off the insects. I prefer to use whats already out there as a deterrent. Get your hands on some "lemon grass" and rub it on your cloths. The skeeters will give you a wide birth. When you go sleep at night, build yourself a small place about 3 feet off the ground and use lemon grass as padding. You will sleep very well at night while laughing at everyone else slapping them selves from skeeters.

I grew up in So Florida with more than our fair share of big gators. Was around them for most of my life.

No way do I get in the water where something that big is lurking.

That said, if it's at all cold there, there is very little to fear. They just aren't active, are generally slow, and have a hard time digesting much of anything in the cold. The biggest fear would be them grabbing already killed and collected birds, not them trying to attack you.
