As a child and through university I used to hunt ducks in the Stuttgart area.
I started at age 5 in a blind in wooded timber with a pothole. Never great hunting as ducks had a massive downturn in those years. Then once the old guy who had the land died we lost our invite. So we started hunting fields. That lasted about 6-8 years until that guy sold out.
By that time people started charging arms and legs for leases. As such we started hunting Bayou Meto. Not awful but at that time (worse now) we would work ducks to get them close and whilst they’d make their inspection passes people would skybust. After a few years of that we gave up.
Simply put Waterfowl hunting just got too expensive for the return on investment of clothes, expensive ammo, boats, time, name it. I think this is a good reason hunting has died off. It takes a large bank account for some forms of hunting. As such a lot of “tradition” gets tossed out.

Yup, hunting is expensive. No two ways about it. When you see advertisements for "Come help us control our wild pig problem- Just $300 per night, with a $500 trophy fee, gratuities greatly appreciated." you know the "industry" has jumped the shark. I've got a deer lease and every year I think about what I could be doing with that lease fee. Then I think about trying to get another lease, that is as convenient, as inexpensive, and as rule free as we have and say "fuck it, here is the check..."
But, there is no denying that when you put a $ on keeping a live animal alive for a hunter to pay for, animals that would otherwise be seen as a nuisance (at best) suddenly have economic value. An elephant is a terribly destructive bag of meat until you say "a hunter will pay $100,000 for the opportunity to kill the animal that is ravaging your farm fields."

Idiots that think hunting is bad are simply that, idiots. By saving Bambi from hunters the animals are in a worse position, as are other animals.
The only reason I dont hunt game is because I'm not paying the gubmit any more money than I already do. They charge hunters for animals like the gubmit owns the animals to start with.

I think it’s bs I’ve never hunted public land in my life and probably paid more of that tax than 99+% of hunters.
What is more bs though is that money paying for parks and then the granola munching Prius drivers getting the land closed to hunting. Happening everywhere.

Where I am you aren’t allowed to shoot a rabid raccoon. You have to trap it. .gov is out of control with the Kings animals and the enviro commies.
Then you have stuff up in MI or Mn where they have taken peoples ground with zero compensation and made them plant pheasant habitat. F pheasants forever and Ducks Unlimited. They lobby for laws that take away your private property rights. All for more “habitat”.

My children were getting sick when we bought meat from a store. We always had wild game but sometimes we bought from a store. Once we made the connection between the store bought and the stomach problems it was strictly game meat or bought directly from the farm/processor.
A couple pounds more and it's time for one of these to get a 22 in the head.
Expensive? Go Be Poor elsewhere. Besides, who's actually going to admit that all the chemicals that are pumped into your food is bad/good for your health.

Pay to play is bringing the demise to hunting. Not enough game on public lands to go around, too much pressure.
Definitely don't disagree there. Used to be all the farmers wanted was enough to cover the cost of pumping water into the fields and enough to cover any winter staff they had. Now, it's insane.
My first "duck club" was the same one my grandfather had belonged to since God knows when (40s?). Funny thing, I remember the setup quite well. Old beat up house, they'd just converted from out-houses a few years before I was born. Walked in, big room with wood burning stove for heat, framed burlesque pictures from the 40's that I was told to "ignore" (lot of blondes IIRC), telephone (party line) by door and a kitchen to the right as you walked in. We had "our wing" and the owner and other members had their "wing". The shower (standing with wraparound curtain) was in our room, but I think it didn't work because we never used it. The johns were about big enough to put your butt in.
Sounds miserable, but I wouldn't trade that experience for anything.
