Hunting & Fishing hunting and 300 blk

Re: hunting and 300 blk

I have in the past and don't recommend it. All animals shot with my 300 Whisper were recovered. Most took a while to find. All were lung shots 75 yards or closer. Some were dead by the time I found them, some weren't(required finishing shots). Bullets just pencil-holed thru, no expansion. Very little blood. Until an truly expanding bullet at subsonic speeds is produced, I will stick with supersonic rounds only.

Re: hunting and 300 blk

We have killed 10-15 deer with the .300 Whisper. All were inside 100 yards and all were easily recovered. All were shot with super-sonic loads. A few with an AR15 and the rest with a Remington 700.

Re: hunting and 300 blk

I concur with 'transinator'. I use 250gr. SMK's (subsonic) from an AR. A high shoulder shot solves the penciling through problem, of a sparse blood trail. There are, however, bullets designed to expand at subsonic speeds. I have not used them, but have heard good things about Hawk Bullets.

Re: hunting and 300 blk

I was under the impressing the 300 whisper excelled at game management in urban areas with the sub-sonic loads and supressors, but then I also read the rifles are zeroed at very specific distances (distance to the bait pile) and head/neck shots were taked. Other than those circumstances I'd pick a 6.5 Grendel for deer and other medium game.
