We're 90 miles from the coast proper, but only 30 miles from a long, extended bay that nearly always winds up filling with bad weather. As a result, we don't get it as bad as coastal towns, but we get it worse than you might expect for being an hour and a half from the beach.

The next seventy-two hours may very well be a hairy ride for some of us, especially in the Carolinas, which are soon going to see Irene's effects. Have a thought for those affected, and let us know how things are going this weekend. I'll be out first thing tomorrow with all the other ninnies to join the scavenge for a few days' worth of water and non-perishables.

Re: Hurricane Irene

Well the earthquake knocked out my phone and internet. The phone came back on line pretty quick but the internet was down till the hurricane started. Gee go figure. As of 0632 it's raining (drizzling) and there is a breeze but all else is OK here in VA Beach. We'll see how she rolls for the rest of the day.

Cheers,

Doc

Re: Hurricane Irene

Coming right over CT. I have to work tomorrow so it's going to be an interesting day.

Re: Hurricane Irene

Yea so I guess that I am the only one on my street that never lost power. The wind is still kicking like crazy. Worse than I have ever seen in the 10 years I have been here. Rain is still sideways.

Here are some pics. Couldnt get out from behind the house I would be blown down.

Re: Hurricane Irene

I just came from Norfolk. Certain streets are under water. I picked up two guys who pulled onto a street from a off-ramp to end up in 3 feet of water.

There is a curfew at 8:00pm here. If anyone has any relatives in my area tell them to avoid downtown Norfolk.

Re: Hurricane Irene

As big as this storm is it's amazing that we only got a little breezy wind today, and not a single drop of rain. The RADAR showed it petered out just to the east of us all day long.

Nice day here actually, raked up and baled 57 round bales of alfalfa........

Re: Hurricane Irene

Glad you got your feed in. The rain is sideways here right now and the winds are gusting over 40 mph. According to the talking heads, the storm gets here some time after midnight. Has anyone informed the storm of this yet?

Re: Hurricane Irene

im on standby to get sent east to help get powerlines back up. just waiting for the call to move. might be in your guys back yard in a few days cutting trees off the line and gettin poles stood up. not sure where were goin yet. supposed to know more tomorrow

Re: Hurricane Irene

BDA this AM is negative. Maintained power, phones, cable etc all day/night. Had to go pick up the wife at about 2000 and big chunks of VA Beach Blvd were w/o power some trees down here and there with isolated flooding. You can hear chain saws running all around the neighborhood right now. All in all it's pretty clear as far as damage in this section goes. Downtown Norfolk got really wet with the storm surge and what not.

It just took forever for that thing to get from NC landfall to here and then it took off north.

Cheers,

Doc

Re: Hurricane Irene

We temporarily lost power three or four times last night, and slept lightly downstairs because of the repeated tornado warnings headed this way. Apparently, the only damage in the neighborhood was to a tree, which thankfully struck nothing but ground. It still looks like hell out, but the rain is almost completely gone, and we're getting some serious tailwind gusts. Regional flooding is going to be substantial, although not right where we are.

Re: Hurricane Irene

We're seeing steady, moderate rain here just above Watkins Glen in South Central NY; started around first light today. Winds are forecast, but haven't arrived as yet. Most forecasts have the storm on the downtrend here by around mid-afternoon.

The storm was some 400+ miles wide.
Its curvature would be a bit more broad and sweeping than that little gust front.

Re: Hurricane Irene

Excessively hyped and underwhelming. How unsurprising.

All this over a Cat 1 storm that was downgraded to a tropical storm.

All because 6 years ago, a bunch of lazy fucking parasites, living in a city situated 12 feet below sea level, "Protected" by levies erected by the lowest bidder, chose to ignore the 2 day advanced warnings of a category 5 hurricane that had already killed 9 people in Florida, chose to hang around to loot from those who evacuated...

Of course, blame had to be placed elsewhere...

What would those of us in Dixie know about hurricanes?

It's too bad there is no precedent for a type of catastrophic storm that occurs in the Northeast that paralyzes transportation and takes out power supplies*...Perhaps then they might be prepared...

*Sarcasm- They're called Noreasters. They follow almost exactly the same course as Irene, often kill dozens of people and typically occur multiple times each year. In winter!

I hope you feel stupid. Easy for you to talk shit about storms living in the Sunshine state. Yea I will say that this storm wasn't all it was hyped to be, but that doesn't change the fact that there were innocent women and children killed by it, along with millions in damage. I'm assuming you didn't think about your post before you submitted it. You obviously don't know what the fuck a snow storm is and if you do you haven't seen or been effected by a bad one, and they happen every year. the shit that happens here isn't just from water, but from snow blockading us in our homes, no transportation, power, leaving us in deathly cold conditions. And you say we have nothing to be prepared for? You my friend don't have a clue.

Sorry for your inconvenience today Cronos but I don't feel stupid at all. Perhaps you missed my point.

I lived 18 years in New Hampshire and have family all over New England. I well know what snow storms are. And Hurricanes. And a tropical storm, while scary, is no Hurricane Andrew!

We always were prepared for Blizzards, especially the Noreasters with the heavy wet snow they always dumped in huge volume. Days without power in the middle of winter, people dying of heart attacks or exposure, was and is still common.

I'm assuming you didn't read my post very carefully. We always prepare for hurricanes here. A natural carry over from my days as a Yankee in the Granite State. The State motto of "Live Free Or Die" is just a polite way of saying, "Leave me the Fuck alone!"

I am still baffled by people who are completely unprepared for nature's "surprises".

For what it's worth, I admit to never experiencing Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Volcanoes or Asteroids.

But I have ass loads of gear and supplies just in case of them too!

Re: Hurricane Irene

Think I read only 10 dead so far...mebbe the hype, and consequent evacuations, saved a few lives along the way....who knows.....it ain't like any one of us is big enough to tell a damn hurricane what to do next.

Getting out of the way, just in case, ain't a stupid thing......

I'm no meteorologist either, nor hurricane expert, but just because it didn't satisfy certain people's lust for total devistation for them to quantify it's presence as a real "storm", doesn't mean it wasn't one.

For my fellow countrymen's sake, I'm glad it wasn't as bad as it coulda been, sure was a big storm.......maybe the economy won't take such a bad hit, maybe the refineries will ramp up sooner and gas prices won't sky rocket as bad, maybe the east coast shipping will resume sooner, etc, etc. Any one of those is something to be grateful for in these interesting times we live in.

So fucking what it got hyped up a little........

+1,000

Tell any of the millions without power that it was a overplayed.
Tell it to the people who have funerals to plan.

If you didn't want to see it on the news, then lift your finger a bit and hit a fucking button. It's that damned easy.

Re: Hurricane Irene

I'd like to take a moment to apologize if I came off as unsympathetic to any of you hammered by the rain, winds, flooding, power outages, injuries or deaths from Irene.

My concern, having lived through many hurricanes and tropical storms over the years, is that people become numb to hysteria and tend to view any warnings as more of the same when the end results don't match their predictions. Authorities and Media need to temper their lust for political power, aversion to Monday morning quarterbacking and ratings in the interest of preserving their credibility.

In many instances, people persuaded or coerced to flee their homes return to find them damaged only by the looters who watched them evacuate.

This storm, while having severe effects in some areas, was shamefully exploited for political and media purposes with cynical top spin provided by people who felt they had nothing to lose by saying "If it saves a life, it's worth it!" What about next time when millions ignore the warnings because the credibility of the authorities is now even more compromised?

Lives depend on the "Authorities", to be sure. Thus, bombastic warnings of doom with the caveat that erring on the side of caution, often result in people tuning out their warnings with each petered out storm. Hence, the desire of Jim Cantore to appear to be the baddest of Bad Asses, leaves many people believing he's a ratings hound with diminished credibility.

We now have the ability to know exactly what the status of these storms are in real time. We are owed an honest analysis of what is going on.

Again, I hope all those who suffered the very real effects of this storm recover quickly and I regret any ill timed words suggesting indifference about their losses, hardships or grief.

Re: Hurricane Irene

I also think it was way over hyped. Granted we had the wettest august on record and blah blah blah. The low lying areas flood without a hurricane so what else would happen with a hurricane. I'm sure the folks down in Florida are laughing at us being pussies and shutting down everything, but that said I would love to see what Florida would do with a measely 8 inches of snow. LOL.

Re: Hurricane Irene

queequeg,

Sorry about coming at you like that. It wasn't directed to you as much as it was about every one bashing whats referred to as "the North". your absolutely right about the whole thing with the media. It happens all the time, and not just in "the North". I guess people forget that we have harsh conditions through most of the year with snowfall and ice, then the melting and flooding of it all in spring. It just gets me pissed reading these Internet tough guys stupid shit. Ive been reading so much of it I'm not going to waste any more time arguing about it.

Re: Hurricane Irene

Looking at the storm, I certainly understand people's feelings affected by it's deposits! It is not fun having water in your home. It is not fun going days and weeks without electricity. It is not fun when normalcy becomes wishful thinking.

Although this storm by comparison wasn't a really bad one, it was a pretty good rainmaker which appears to have caused most of the problems and damage. I'm certainly glad with the amount of people affected that casualties although tragic and my sympathies are extended it wasn't worse.

We certainly appreciated the goodness and kindness from you folks up North when we were in need down here. And if there are any brothers up there that I may be of assistance to, I certainly extend the offer in whatever way I can help.

I do think the media sensationalized the storm, but that is what the media does. However, if they hadn't think how much worse things could of been with a mostly unprepared large populous of people affected by the storm. Understandably so as rarely the threat of hurricanes exists that far North.

I remember well the feeling of helplessness I felt taking a boat to my office and wondering how was I going to overcome and survive such a mess. My suggestion to those affected in this manner is to form a plan and take it one day at a time. It is not so overwhelming when you do the very best you can "one day at a time"

Best of luck to all of you affected by Irene. I'm a little less cynical having been affected by hurricanes all of my life.
