Hurricane Irene

Re: Hurricane Irene

Looks like Vermont is flooding. Philly got wet but nothing like other folks.

Good thing there was plenty of warning and everyone who was supposed to do something did do something. The Jersey Governor was pretty blunt about the need to evacuate.

Re: Hurricane Irene

I wouldn't say that Philly avoided it completely. The usual low-lying places got hammered, like they always do, and some of them worse than usual. Typically, the further inland they go, the less wind damage hurricanes bring, but the further they come inland, the more they seem to slow down and dump more rain than usual.

Here's a site with some incredible before, during, and after shots:

Re: Hurricane Irene

Eastern Shore of MD - Finally back online. 36+ Hrs with no power seriously sucked...Lil' Clawz did his best to make me crack but I held firm. Lady Clawz' bailed and went to her folks with Lil clawz'...they never lost power or had flooding.

I manned the generator and kept vigil of the property. We had a SERIOUS amount of rain - never actually been entirely surrounded by water with no means of leaving except chopper...kind of scary. Just glad everyone is safe and no major damage to speak of....Hope everyone faired as well.

Re: Hurricane Irene

Some of the same areas hardest hit by Irene in NC are now having severe thunderstorms, and there have been a few tornadoes reported.
Talk about salt in the wounds.

Quite the paradox, but you get the semi-funny, no?

And since we're palavering, a gallery of images from Brattleboro up in Vermont:

Seems they weren't expecting anything this bad in their wildest dreams.

Re: Hurricane Irene

Tucker,

Those are some of the coolest Sat images I've seen. I remember hearing about GOES, but never took a look before...nice work bub. How/where on their website did you find the color images, and how did you go about photo shopping (to scale) that image over Europe? (looking for website or software for PC to have some fun with Photoshop.)

Thanks,

-Pat

Re: Hurricane Irene

So the 'live' report from here on the ground in VT is not too bad.

We got a ton of rain, up to 18 inches in some places. Lots of roads gone and closed. Next town over got doused bad, but all up and running a few days later. We got lucky and sustained minimal damage.

My own property... lost the driveway, but was on the tractor at 6am Monday and put the driveway back where it belongs by 9am. Better than it's been all summer. Sorry FEMA, but get lost.

Spent the storm on duty telling people to stop driving their pickup trucks through the closed flooded roads (in reality, if I were still 19... I'd have been with them...). And had to chew out some clamhammers who were body surfing in a massively flooded river and trying to prove Darwinism doesn't exist. Really. Can't make this stuff up. They came ashore and went home.

The most interesting thing here in rural VT is that the cut-off and stranded communities... have turned into post-apocalyptic nirvanas. Town meetings to share food. Neighbors digging each other out and sharing rooms. Stores/Hotels giving away produce/food and acting as food kitchens. It's small-town America at its best. Not a single incident of looting anywhere in the state that I am aware of, and not a single person crapping on a stadium seat.

Some folks got hit hard and my heart goes out to them and I hope they get all the assistance they need. Most of us did fine. Everyone in VT, I think, acted like patriots. Though our Governor spent the storm at his weekend home in Nova Scotia (and is catching grief for that...) most people showed their best sides!

Anyway, thanks to everyone for their wishes of safety and good words. It wasn't as bad as it could have been, was terrible for some... and gave a lot of people a chance to show their good sides.

Cheers,

Sirhr

LOL. </div></div>

i lived in texas (great place not knocking it) for about 2yrs and when it snowed or iced, things were a mess, accidents everywhere, businesses shut down, all sorts of mayhem just because people arent used to driving in it to know you can drive 80mph you just cant stop. i imagine florida would experience the same effects. when a hurricane/tropical depression hits states that dont usually see that kind of weather i can understand wanting to be prepared for the worst.

Re: Hurricane Irene

I just got home from working Irene's damage.Power is still off to many, and we would still be somewhere on the East coast,if Lee had not threatened our own system.Am expecting to be sent South before its over.Worked mostly in New Jersey.Thankfully,it was not as bad as predicted, and not as bad as the worst that I have seen.My thoughts and prayers are still offered to the victims of this storm.I forgot to take a camera, but after 30 years, the pics look the same, only the places change.
Hope everyone here affected by either of these storms are ok, Pete
