Hurricane Irma

Practically everyone is buggin' out, whereas my sister (who was up here for my mother's birthday) is in a tizzy trying to get back down to Naples, to look after her/their stuff. They live in a good community, all the neighbors watch out for each other, and someone(s?) will be up 24 hrs a day, watching for looters.

But just the efforts that they have to make, to get back down there, is crazy. 4 planes, 3 layovers.......

She was telling me last night that this is already a Cat 5, and expected to get bigger yet. They don't have a "Cat 6" rating, yet......

I live in Faith.

To everyone that will never get any of Irma please tell me how you fell about your ins rates going up because of the bitch? To me your want the address, I don't care, but my rates should not go up because you do,... but they will.

Insurance is nothing but a single payer system. If costs go up we all suffer. They will I'll redesignate flood zones and and all that. That's the scam of it all.

Spoke with my aunt in Ft. Meyer this morning. They were recommending everyone evacuate but have not made it mandatory yet. However, all the stores and restarants were closing down at 2PM today. She said they haven't been able to buy ice for a week.

My parents are with my sis and BIL in Weston and will be bugging out tomorrow AM

Anyone know of a really good FL traffic monitoring site? The obvious route out of Weston is US 27 which heads NW and passes west of Orlando (a shitshow if I ever saw one). From there they have options (US 301, US 17, FL 19) towards JAX or southern GA (where they are ultimately headed to my brother's SIL)

Waze. But any of them work the same way. They use GPS tracking in your phone to determine traffic.

The GFS model is keeping it offshore Florida and making landfall near the SC/NC border, then tracking straight up to my place.
The Euro gives slight landfall near Miami, then hugs the coast to Daytona, with second landfall near the GA/SC border, tracking the state line as it barrels off to the NW.

NOAA has shifted the track west. Now looks to be heading for Disney world. Bitch just needs a vacation :D

Yep, whatever with Google Maps, Maps on iOS, they all use realtime traffic from users, I've been watching it off and on today. US 27 is a good route to Orlando (I've driven it many, many times, but moved away from FL in '06), from there stay on the side routes and don't get on the Turnpike unless they don't mind waiting in an hour of traffic where it meets I-75. US 301, another I used to take a whole lot, should be a good option but they should use their own phones to see what realtime is telling them. Just punch in the address, tell it "Fastest Route", and run with it but recompute every now and then. Avoid the freeways, 75 hasn't been too bad south of Tampa but is fucked north of the turnpike when it gets that volume, 95 is hit and miss the whole length, turnpike is straight screwed the whole way, I've seen a ton of red on those routes today.

Side note, looking at old 27 again, reminded me of the folks that live out that way on the southside of the lake (Clewiston Moore Haven, Labelle). I recruited more than a few into the Corps from that area last decade, mostly just smart kids living in poverty wanting a way out and not afraid of a war at full steam then. Lots of rickety mobile homes on 20 acre stretches of personal freedom and privacy out that way, good people that I hope weather the storm as well as possible. Everyone thinks of Miami clubs, Disney and beaches when they think of Florida; I think of cattle ranches, bass and fishing, and sugar fields. It's the folks out there that will hurt hard from this thing, especially if it goes straight up the middle as their homes are absolutely not ready for this shit.

Roger that.

Latest sitrep is the family unit is bugging out of western Ft Lauderdale as we speak heading up 27 to 301, driving all night in shifts into S GA to take shelter at brother's SIL.

I am a little more at ease than I was 24 hrs ago. Won't be 100% until the signal comes in that everyone is at SIL safe and sound.

And +1 on all the good rednecks in FL. Rednecks, not latinos, are my kind of people.

What do you think of the 19/98 route?

That sucks. Advise him to GTFO. I'm in St. pete myself and already sent my wife and parents packing. I'll join them if it shifts any more to the west. Been designing buildings in FL for 15+yrs, anything over 130mph winds and you don't want to be here.

These will take it house-by-hix________.jpg

Keep in mind this thing will still likely be hurricane strength the entire way through FL into south GA. Might just get the nickname Juggernaut and earn it better than a 185gr 30 cal.

If that track moves much father to the west, Fla. proper may be a write off.

Meh, when I lived in the state I always thought of the panhandle as just South Alabama, y'all can have that shit. Damn 'Noles country... GO GATORS!

Seriously though, gators, stay your ass in the swamp, no need to come out during the storm surge. And pass the word on to the pythons, they need to stay their ass there too.

That is a forgotten problem most of the time. When it's all over there are critters in places they never use to be, no matter if they have legs or not.
Side note, I loved Fla but I watched her slowly change to NE thinking. When it got to the point it was unbearable in 93, I pulled stakes. Here in Bama today (save 4 big citys)it's like Fla of the 50s, in many, many, ways.

Everyone that lives there knew this day was coming.

Yep but, herd thinking is still herd thinking. Something comes with every address, the trick is forward thinking before rooting in. Then again the eye candy of a 300k home that only cost 75k to build but will cost you 900k before it's paid off, based on a 30 is the American way. Now place that monument to look at me next to cypress trees an knees an you have the makings of a bitch fest if you (A) lose your specialty job or it rains alittle. Not to worry Americans who never live/d that way, will be required to bail your stupid ass out, just so tics can get you vote.

I have been here 40 odd years and although there are those who match your description don't put everyone in that box. But yes I knew there were weather risks and that exists everywhere.

btw most of this state are everyday people just like anywhere else. I could live in a big fancy home but I don't. I am a simple man with simple needs I still live in the same working class neighbor hood I have for 30 years. Working class people are real good people. I like living with them.

That's because most of the state are retirees from the NE. NC is becoming the same thing, at least in charlotte and Raleigh. We call them halfbacks. They moved out of NY to FL, realized it isn't all that and moved halfway back. Unfortunately they bring their politics with them. Where I live in Raleigh, it's becoming infested with hipsters. I swear to all that is holy I'm gonna go around shaving beards and cutting off man buns

Might as well spike their Latte's and Frappichinos so they never reproduce while your at it. This generation of man bun skinny jean wearing whatever they call themselves is a joke
