greetings,

I flipped through the FAQ section, but I could not find the information I was looking for. Hopefully you folks could help me out here. I am looking to purchase my first bolt gun and the scope lingo is very confusing. Specifically, I am looking to purchase a setup that will be able to shoot out to 1000 yards, but I have no idea what scope to consider. The only requirement that I would request is quality glass (USO, SB, NF or Leupold).

1) What would be a good all around scope to throw out a round at this distance range?

2) as far as reticles, what would be the best option? I've heard that the horus reticle makes life easier, but a mil dot reticle is the standard.

3) as far as scope base rings, what exactly is the different between the different MOA rings?

Maybe 2000ish or cheaper

Re: I have some questions to ask regarding scope

US Optics to have a full custom scope, every spec. tailored to your liking. Local US manufacture with excellent after sale warranty and service.

Same range you can also look at NF scopes, make sure you focus on what you will need on a scope. Best to have matching system, and FFP to be ideal.

Good luck, and have fun shopping

All the scopes you named are decent, with Leupold on the lower end of the price range and S&B on the upper end. For the range you're looking at, I would say either Leupold, NF or possibly a used USO will fit in. The size scope and options will depend on what you're planning to shoot, but for out to 1000 yards you should be able to get into a 3-15ish power scope.

Reticle is purely up to the shooter. I went with Mil reticle and mil knobs because there is a ton of experience out there. I also prefer mil/mil vs mil/moa so that rules out Leupold for me, although my wife has a mark IV she loves, even though it's mil/moa.

The different MOA is usually in the base. Scopes only have some much adjustment in them, so if you are planning on a 100 yd zero and to shoot out to 1000 yards or beyond, you're likely going to need some elevation in your base to be able to dial your scope that far.

Scope, ring, base, rifle set up is all about what you plan to do with it. Most also subscribe to the school of thought that your rings should be as low as possible while your scope still fits without touching the barrel.

Hope that helps a little bit. I'm by no means an expert and if I messed something up, I'm sure someone will correct me.

Why am I reading posts that say the scope should be mounted as close to the barrel as possible without touching it?

Also guys, budget is 2k or less.

Re: I have some questions to ask regarding scope

Because you want your eye to be in line with the scope....some scopes have touchy eye boxes...so if you aren't looking through the area very close to the center of the scope...your sight picture will blackened on edges etc. Also...it's important to not touch the barrel..as heat builds up in the barrel...it expands...this puts pressure on one end of the scope. Also not sure how things would hold up if the scope is bouncing off the barrel shot after shot.

Just some humble thoughts,

Wayne

Re: I have some questions to ask regarding scope

I have remedied eye box issues..... problems created by the need to use a taller rings...by installing an adjustable cheekpiece ( Karston ) on my stocks. Again....to keep the eye in line with the center of the eye piece of the scope.
