To the OP's point, how many times does the Federal Government prosecute this specific gun crime? My guess is hardly at all, as the Federal Government almost NEVER prosecutes gun crimes, period. Meric Garland specifically put Weiss, a Trump appointee, on this case. You don't think there was a specific reason for that? You think he picked his name out of a hat? This show trial is just as much political theatre as Trumps was, and after getting caught with their pants down on a For Biden's Only plea deal they want to make this look like they're throwing the book at him.
But practically, this too is probably a completely unusual situation. Even when drug dealing drug users get busted I think they rarely choose to prosecute gun crimes, and certainly not (what basically boils down to) a process crime on a government form. POTUS is pretending to sacrifice his son on the alter of Justice, not on a novel legal theory with no legs, but on laws that never get prosecuted, and he can say it was a Trump appointed prosecutor to boot. So many fucking morons are buying it. I'm not even paying attention, and I'm sure they only people that are is the Biden campaign team trying to choreograph the spectacle and give the MSM the talking points.
You could see through his whole show trial (even if you didn't have his statements out of court) Trump was pissed. Hunter et al seem pretty nonplused given his crimes are actually real, they are clearly illegal, they happened, and there is an orgy of evidence in his own words on his own laptop. He may not be convicted in a 70%+ dem district where it's all Bidens all the time, but that hardly matters. Hunter would probably like jury nulification so he isn't a fellon and all that goes along with that, but he knows even if his dad's constitutes fail to aquit him nothing will come of it anyway. The Biden campaign would probably rather see him convicted for their optics. He's acting almost like a man who's going through the motions of a trial knowing full well that there is a golden-ticket/get-out-of-jail-free card in his back pocket.
