in the process of mounting a new scope to my 700 5R and found that I needed to chop a bit off the front of the rail so I could get the scope far enough back to get proper eye relief. The scope is a Hensoldt 4-16X56 and this scope is kinda short and stout and the objective bell was going hit the rail unless I dremeled it a bit. I was examining the results of my butchery and noticed the bit of rail I chopped was not symmetrical at all. The rail is made by Weaver and has 441 written on it, FWIW. What do you think? Would you think this could possibly be perfectly level with the boreline? Please forgive my terminology if it is incorrect. Thanks.

Now don't get offended but people need to learn from your mistake. NEVER spend money on an outstanding scope, accurized rifle, then skimp on the rings and bases. Many times people will say "My rifle shoots like garbage, That smith sucks, the scope sucks....yada yada yada. NO! your base and rings suck. Your problem is a 30 base. Your rings and base are the point where the scope and rifle come into contact and become one. If these are cheap, out of spec, and off everything will not be right. The stars will not align and the world will be lost.....Just saying

I thought that might be the verdict. FWIW, I bought the rifle with the rail on it. Really, for all I know that rail is straight on the gun but it does appear to be somewhat jacked up if symmetry is a trait to look for in a rail. The rifle does shoot well, though. New rail it is, then. Thanks guys.

Damn, you have a nice scope, congrats!,so give it well deserved "support group".I actually use budget($500 under)scopes most of the time that I know work, but always use a top brand rail(I love my NF)and I've had good luck with my Burris XTR's rings. You know what to do,Goodshootin'
