Any opinions about which ammo to use for 308win caliber rifle with 27 1/4" length with 1 in 12" twist. Please make suggestions on manufacturer, grain, and ammo/bullet for the following applications:

1) practice target shooting
2) competition shooting
3) hunting deer

Thanks.

Black Hills, Federal Gold Metal Match, Cor-Bon, not in any particular order; 168 grain or 175 grain whichever shoots better in your rifle.
#3 depends on the size/weight of the deer you are planning to shoot, the distance you plan on shooting, and whether bloodshot meat is a factor.

Good luck

well for hunt'n and papper I would go with a 178gn A-max.this load will give you good results for both.but some of the guys have tested the new 178gn MBT loads from Hornady and say its a great load all so.but wouldn't use it for hunt'n.

my question for you is this.are you able to load up your own.if so I would look into the 208gn A-max for both.then this way you should be able to take game out to 1000 with a good kill.but thats something to look into.just my opinion.

Tough to say what would be ideal or work in your rifle but for matches, check out some of the new Hornady 178 BTHP Superformance. It is very accurate and running about 2830fps from 26" rifles. Not a misprint, 2830fps. The new bullet has a .530 BC. This load might just bring the .308 back into the winners circle.

If loading then the Hornady 178 AMAX and Varget is a good combo for all you want to do. The 178 BTHP bullet in the Superformance ammo will be available towards the end of the year and would work for loading for matches also with Varget.

yeah the 208 will shoot from your barrel.but you will have to get some R17 to do it.and start at 46-47gn watching for pressure signs.heck one guy is running them in a 20 inch barrel with a 1:12 twist.thats if I recall right.and your barrel should really be able to make them fly.

I have killed several deer over the years using only BH 175 gr match. Distances have been as short as 25yds out to over 300 yards. This ammo works like a champ in my Ruger M77VT (26" barrel). Most deer have dropped witin a few feet, others have gone at most 50yds. This is a given though: shot placement. BH is good ammo and cheaper than Fed.

208's are being shot outta 20" 1/12 twist barrels with great success. Give them a try if you get the chance.

thanks for help! Have shot 150s & 178s, both shot well with good accuracy. I will need to try 208s, but question of whether they remain stable and supersonic pass 800-1000yards? I guess should be okay with long barrel even if not a very tight twist?
