Guy I shoot with drives a Tesla. He says he has taken himself out of the equation and uses the self-drive feature exclusively while he surfs the web. I can't bring myselfvto trust other drivers. I sure as hell do not trust technology.

Isnt the whole point of those cars to be self-driving? I am not excusing her just curious how she can be charge with DUI if she aint driving
My opinion...she's in charge, so DUI. Now, the accident and deaths I could argue both sides. Is Ford responsible because of a defect or failure, or are they legally covered with whatever note flashes on the display when selecting the selfi-drive option? It will be interesting to hear the legal arguments and see how this ends.

I think, statistically, there would be fewer wrecks if everyone was on auto pilot all the time, there would still be wrecks, but fewer. DUI wrecks would plummet.
The suspect’s Ford had the OPTION, but I didn’t get the impression from the story that it was ACTUALLY engaged.
Obviously, there need to be laws that drivers are alert and sober so our poor state and local .gov’s don’t lose revenue streams……

If you exercised due care and the car malfunctioned then you are legally not at fault. It’s just like when your brakes fail or tire blows out or whatnot. But if you’re drunk then you are unable to exercise due care. Hence it’s your fault.

it's a software update. I see them like annually in the mail, but I get a software update every 1-2 months. every single time I've gotten one in the mail it was for an old software version no longer in use fwiw.

They can EASILY fix the whole self driving situation....but they won't and I can't understand why.

There are quite a few ways to have a camera on the drivers face, if the driver takes their eyes off the road, self drive to side of road and self park, turn off engine.

I would venture to guess that a lot of people buy them for the Self Drive features and if they cant get around the safety features the they might not buy the vehicle in the first place.

literally everything you listed is built into fsd. you can not buy tesla's fsd without those safety features. I'm not sure about the sensors in ford's blue cruise. I was so unimpressed I didn't bother to explore at the time.

The problem with this tech is that assuming everything works properly, what is the point? If the law requires you to supervise the driving, why are you not driving then? If the law changes to allow you to do something else, then parts breakage and malfunction will cause these accidents because there won’t be enough time to react if you’re distracted. Bad idea.
Pretty sure the point was to replace every truck and bus driver with self driving trucks and busses. A few crashes later not so much. Now it's a selling point for entitled douche bags that are too important to perform the menial task of driving when they can be watching porn instead.
And these douchebags need to be sued into oblivion when their Teslas crash. Tesla needs to be sued into oblivion for facilitating this shit.
I wish the guy who rear-ended me a couple weeks ago would have had some of those features, maybe my neck wouldn't be so sore.
I had a 2024 Ford loaner SUV that had all this crap, I was clueless at first how it worked, especially when it fought me to center the vehicle in the lane and it's a long way from perfect. It would disengage if there were no stripes on a wide divided road or two lane that had not been restriped after a retop. Secondly, it was disconcerting to drive it very far engaged, it would slow to pace the vehicle in front of you, if that vehicle left the lane abruptly, what ever your preset cruise speed was, it immediately tried to get there. Thirdly, it required you to place one or both hands on the wheel periodically or it would disengage and begin to coast, slowing at a pretty good pace.
I tested this all out on two 5hr drives each way, two very different road types and it was unnerving on a 2 lane county road with some serious curves, but was actually nice on a major divided interstate highway thru multiple states. It made those long tedious stretches tolerable. The lane guidance thingy sucked in morning and evening traffic, it could not decide what it wanted to do in heavy traffic

I haven't tried the 24 ford's but their shit sucked ass 2 years ago when I was buying.

that only pertains to 2020 software, which was done away with like 3 months after it's release. I will grant that older versions, pre 2023 we not as good as now by no means. they update it every 1-2 months.
when you hear "Tesla recall" that's just a software update. you do them at home over wifi while you sleep, takes 30 mins.
I have no idea how many versions have since been released and reprogrammed. it keeps "learning" and getting a little better here and there.
if it didn't work they wouldn't be the most valuable auto manufacturer by market cap in the world.
also I'm surprised by how many of you believe NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, etc. as if they would never have an agenda or lie to their viewers... LOL.

You don’t get it. It is wrong to deliberately unleash a 5000 lb vehicle into traffic without being in full control. If a regular car malfunctions you can still pull over and stop. When an electric self driving car malfunctions, by the time you realize what’s happening, it’s too late. Your reaction time is insufficient to avoid a collision.

There’s a sharp ish turn in the road that also meets a side road. The county parasites didn’t paint the yellow lines on the curve. Idk if that’s what Tesla looks for but the car went straight on the turn and through a fence. Boards / posts went through the guy.

And that's before we even get into how it's making everyone even worse at driving and how modern vehicles have complete garbage visibility and far too tall beltlines.
I work automotive and the entire industry has gone to complete and utter shit. I can name the actual reliable currently made vehicles I know of on one hand. And even those have to have at minimum software update recalls.
