I bought this rifle a couple of days ago. It'll be a safe queen. Near mint condition pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in 300 H&H Magnum. Serial number shows the rifle to have been built in 1950. Having the box, hang tag, and owner's manual is a serious plus. Overall, a rare find.

Re: Interesting Rare Find- What Do You Think?

Nice....you gotta use it for something though. One of the best hunting rifles made, at least kill a pig or deer and then put it up. Great find, congrats!

Re: Interesting Rare Find- What Do You Think?

What kills me is the price on the end of the box- "109.50" I paid a HELL of a lot more than that for it! Looks like someone bought it, probably went elk hunting in Montana or something like that (or maybe not even that), then put it away. It's immaculate- not a scratch on the furniture and not a mark on the blueing. It's also interesting that it's marked "300 Magnum" and no mention of H&H. The rifle was made before the development of the 300 Win Mag so I guess they didn't need to differentiate back then. I do want to shoot it at least once

I did catch that on the box. I guess back then they just figured you knew what "300 Magnum" meant in a Winchester rifle. I believe the Weatherby's were proprietary in those days- if you wanted a Weatherby cartridge you had to buy their rifle. I may be wrong on that, but don't think so.

I got no deal on this one- it came out of a shop who knew what they had. Still, it was too cool to pass up; a real piece of American shooting iron history and I had to have it. It'll live with my grandfather's old Winchesters- a pump model 61 .22 and a model 12 20 gauge- and a very nice Belgian Browning 12 gauge over/under that my dad got as a prize when he won the Armed Forces Trap and Skeet championship back in the day.

Anyway, what else are you gonna do with your money these days- put it in the bank at 0.1%?!

Thanks for the compliments- this one's definitely a keeper.

Re: Interesting Rare Find- What Do You Think?

I read this post and near its end realized that this 1950 M70 wasn't found any more than it was lost. No, this gem searched far and wide for a retirement from a life of undignified anonymity, inactivity, and downright pamper. Upon finding a berth amidst a M61 and a M12 It knew that it's search would unlikely yield a better prospect. However, this M70 hasn't decided whether or not to use its buyer, continue its coma, or be the centerfold in Guns & Ammo. If my master was this rifle, and, providing I met all the qualifications as set forth by it, I'd pine for all three. If given a chance game prefers being shot with nostalgic walnut-stocked, 4140 barreled, cone-breeched, claw extractored and mechanical ejectored rifles.

I have a 1942 (from pre-war parts) M70 in 270 and a M12 made in 1950 and they are used, but they were used before I acquired them. I guess I'd have to say that a M70 robbed of its function might be pretty, but suggests its owner needs some exercise; a M70 unused is abused and misused like an auto cherished and displayed, but never used, deteriorates to the point of inoperability; a heart, no longer functioning terminates the body it's in; and thus a warehoused M70 contributes nothing--not even to its family reputation.

But, just look at this beauty; to mark it up is "depraved indifference to M70 heritage." Ah yes, what I'd give for a conundrum like this!

That's awesome - congrats! I didn't realize how close the bolt safety resembles those found on the AI AW's & AI Mk III's - I'm assuming it's a 3 position?

FWIW, with a consumer price index (CPI) ratio of 9.64 from 1950 to 2012 ... $109.50 in 1950 is equivalent to $1,055.58 today.

It was purchased from Collector's. Initially I was interested in a 1960 Model 70 in .30-06 they had but this one far surpassed anything else they had- or any that I had ever seen. Salesman said they "had a few tire kickers" but no one wanted to commit. I didn't think twice about it- I knew I'd never see another one like this. As I mentioned above, this was no bargain; Collector's isn't a bargain shop. I'm looking at it as an investment- 20 years from now when I'm retired and living on cat food, it will be worth a lot more than I paid for it.

Re: Interesting Rare Find- What Do You Think?

Great rifle, I have one just like it that I was given by an uncle. Mine looks just like yours but mine has a folding rear blade sight and it's marked "300 H&H Magnum". Interesting differences.

Re: Interesting Rare Find- What Do You Think?

What a great find. It would pose a great dilema for me...do i shoot it...or not

m1match. What year is your rifle? I wonder if they added the "H&H" Magnum stamp after they brought out the 300Win Mag? Interesting is has H&H Magnum on the box.

Re: Interesting Rare Find- What Do You Think?

Great find, The Rifleman's Rifle, You got a deal regardless of price. Betcha there ain't many like it left.

Re: Interesting Rare Find- What Do You Think?

Hell of grab...congrats man. There's no way I would take that one out for anything other than show and tell. I'm sure you have plenty of other rifles to shoot and you probably won't find another like that.

Thanks for sharing.

Re: Interesting Rare Find- What Do You Think?

I've never understood those that collect but don't use. I once saw a 1956 'vette with 56 miles on it — every one in a parade. The man bought the car, put it in his garage, and never once took it for a ride!

It's not "He who dies with the most toys", that wins, it's, "He who wears out the most toys" that wins!

Re: Interesting Rare Find- What Do You Think?

I will add my compliments to thread; what an absolutely sweet rifle. You don't see one from that time frame with all the accessories it has with it. I would not shoot it, just keep it well oiled and take it out of the gun safe every now and then to fondle it. Perhaps get a factory letter on it.
