Is it weird that my 308 with smk 175gr col is 2.793 at the lands, isnt that shorter then normal considering that all the factory load data are 2.8?

Re: Is my 308 chamber short?

Factory load data is a GUIDE only, you set the OAL based on your chamber.

Sierrra and others aay the 80 SMK 223 is 2.550. If I loaded White Oak to 2.550 the bullet would stick in the barrel if I tried to eject a live round.

I use a Stony Point gage to determine OAL, not reloading manuals.

Re: Is my 308 chamber short?

I was planning on trying my 178gr amax load with these 175 smk, I am using 43.5 varget and br2 cci primers. Im wondering what a good seating depth is, Im thinking 2.790

Re: Is my 308 chamber short?

I have a Winchester that is short like that. But can’t help you on seating depth yet as I have not truly developed a load for it. My first test was seating them .015 off and it shot well but I have not been out to test anymore yet. The plan is the next batch will be .007 off the lands.

43.4g Varget was one of my nodes and there was another up around 44.6 with Lapua brass but it still early to say. This was all with 175 smk.

Re: Is my 308 chamber short?

Is your rifle factory or custom? I would think custom with that short of freebore. But I can see no practical reason or benefit for it being so short. You cannot even shoot FGGM.

As long as you know where it hits the lands then you know how to work with the reloading data. I have some short chambers in a couple of 308's but not quite that short.

Re: Is my 308 chamber short?

It is a Savage 10fcp-k, It has not been rebarreled or rechambered.
The 175 SMK seems to be a fatter bullet then the 178gr Amax, the amax hits the lands at around 2.830.

I think this may be a reason that the rifle is not very picky with factory grade match loads. it loves Hornady custom match series 168gr amax ammo. I have not tried Federal Match in it.

Re: Is my 308 chamber short?

Use your OAL tool to measure for each style of bullet. They will all be different. Then just set your COAL to jump .015-.020 for each different style.

To answer your original question - yes, your freebore is a little shorter than most factory rifles. But if you are hand loading, then you can accommodate it. If you only want to shoot Factory FGMM 175 and they stick in the rifling...then send it back for repair.

C.O.A.L of 2.8 is the distance of the overall cartridge. This is the max length of the magazine as well. I can't tell by your statement of "2.793 to the lands" means the comparator length is 2.793 and the COAL is now longer or shorter than 2.8.

I'm referring to overall length. 2.793 is the total length

Re: Is my 308 chamber short?

To me it is very odd Savage would ream a chamber that a FGGM would not even chamber in. I think I would contact Savage and see what they had to say about it. krw

Re: Is my 308 chamber short?

If you are using a Hornady modified case to measure with, take a #20 sledge to it. The Hordady modified case for my 300WSM almost drove me to drink thinking my chamber was to short.

Send them two fired cases from your rifle to tap. Problem solved.

Re: Is my 308 chamber short?

i had a savage 10 fcp as well that has a short chamber running 175 smks at 2.83" and when i first started shooting i was running 167 scenars with great success and when I got this FCP they were like 2.74" OAL.

Re: Is my 308 chamber short?

I am also shooting a Savage 10fcp-k and have noticed that when shooting fgmm 175 I have to give the bolt a little push to get it to seat and drop the bolt handle. I thought it was a little odd. The gun shoots fine though with no problems. I havent measured the chamber, but will when I start doing my own reloading.
