Is the 40X marked in any special way?

I bought a stripped action/bolt/trigger from another Hide member and when I was getting things ready to take some measurements I noticed that it is D/T'd for a rear aperature sight. It has the tiny little factory set screws in place in the aperature mounting holes as well, I doubt it's an aftermarket job.

It's a 7 digit, no prefix RH long action 700 with a 473 bolt face. I don't think I have a 40X, but I know very little about the definitive markings on a regular action vs. the "fabled" 40X

Can someone fill me in if there's something I should be aware of? I don't really have any plans to sell it, just curiosity.

Correct.

Re: Is the 40X marked in any special way?

They chambered long action calibers in the short action 40x. They were single shot and fed through the port fine, but they won't eject un-fired shells.

I have been wondering what Remington considers a 40x lately though, because they advertise their new .338 Lapua Magnum as a 40x action, even though it is marked 700 and a long action.

Re: Is the 40X marked in any special way?

As stated ALL 40-X actions are short!!! Remington made 25-06, 7Mag, 7STW,30-06 300Mag, I think even a few 300H&H mags and 30-338mags and 300Weatherby mags using the short action. Only issue was extracting a loaded round sometimes. Remember the 40-X was/is a custom shop job so almost anything could be had if they considered it safe and you wanted to pay for it.

The screws in the side were drilled and tapped into all short and long actions until mid 70's. I have A prefix and even a B prefix with them. I also have a 222 Varmint Special with C prefix but think it was drilled and tapped by someone other than Remington as it was setup for aperature sites.

The 40-X is clearly marked in the same place as a 700 etc.

Right you are! I actually got a better deal on one in 30-06 at Gander Mountain because they thought it had been re-barreled... I stole it!

Re: Is the 40X marked in any special way?

That's what I figured, I have another LH 700 Long action, it has the same no prefix era SN and I don't remember it being D/T'd for aperature sights, which is what threw me for a loop.

Thanks for the great info, I appreciate it.
