We should be able to fit two or three more teams into this match, as we'll undoubtedly have a couple of no-shows... so if you're wanting to enter, PM or email your team members names, and read the match info at the page linked below. Round count of 50 to 60 rounds each should do it. Ranges will be from 400 to 1000 yards (approximate), and rifles need to be .223 Rem to 300 Win Mag in power. If you're unsure if your rifle would be permitted, PM or email. Entry is 180 dollars per team, and can be paid in cash or by credit card (for 4% additional fee) on match day. Rally at Bland, Virginia Subway sandwich shop by 9:10am July 26th to convoy to range and begin registration. There will be an unknown range, uncertain size target that the teams will need to "trajectory range" without using electronics, so shooters should have printed trajectory tables showing drop values every 20 to 25 yards to complete this stage. More info can be obtained by PM or email, or may follow in this thread.

BangSteel Challenge 2014

Tentative stages for this match include the following:

1. Shooters begin by engaging targets from prone position at 400 to 600 yards. This will be occasion to determine if rifles are hitting high or low based on initial zero for the match. Often, depending on scope and mount type, long rides on the highway can move your zero a bit. Midrange targets of ~3 MOA can be of help getting your sight settings tweaked if necessary.

2. Shooters will take seats in the front of a vehicle (older Ford Bronco most likely) and while spotter uses binoculars to spot for the shooter's impacts, the shooter engages a target at 600 to 700 yards with as many as 7 shots, until target gets a hit. The shooter will engage with the door open, using the door jamb area for a rifle support. We will have a sandbag in the vehicle for those who want to use it. We will provide a pair of binoculars in the vehicle for those who may need them. The team will decide which shooter spots, and which engages.

3. The team member who spots in the previous stage will be the shooter in this stage. The other team member will be the shooting "bench"... the supporting shooter gets on all fours and makes a firm as possible shooting table for the shooter. Target distance and round count will be announced.

4. Teams will engage targets at mid to long range from behind rocks, with both shooters on their rifles, one spotting for another as they each take shots on designated targets. There will likely be a short walk to the rock wall barrier for this and one other stage. Distance of walk will be 250 yards, there and back. After this stage, we will have a catered lunch.

5. Final stage will be unknown distance/uncertain target size. We believe this most closely represents real world targets, which vary in size, and/or disposition to shooter, making precise reticle ranging nearly impossible. This stage will be a simulated EMP event, where no electronics may be used. Teams will "go behind the barn" one or two at a time and be shown a target in the distance. This target will be "trajectory ranged" for distance. By "trajectory ranging" we mean you will use knowledge of your rifle's trajectory to determine distance to the target. This is a useful exercise for completing a range card in an area where you have no rangefinder. Shooters will need to estimate range the old fashioned way :) and then take a shot... spot impact, correct, then shoot again until a hit is recorded. Both shooters will need to hit the target, and they will then need to inform the r/o of their range estimate for that target. Having a hard copy of trajectory for your rifles, showing MOA or MIL drop for every 20 to 25 yards will be invaluable for this stage. Scoring will be based on shot total between the shooters, as well as how close to the actual range (as reported by 2 or more Leica LRF's) the team estimate is.

The round count for each shooter is not likely to exceed 60 rounds. The majority will use 50 or fewer. The more accurate the fire, the fewer shots will be needed.

There is a rifle range nearby, for those who want to get a 100 yard zero early Saturday, or sometime Friday in the event you choose to travel into town and stay for the evening. We have a corporate rate for lodging set up with the Comfort Suite hotel in Wytheville, VA @ 85 dollars per night for up to 3 persons. The Big Walker Motel in Bland, Virginia also has affordable lodging, at around 50 per night for 2 persons the last time we checked.
.
These stages represent the general framework of the match, and may change slightly or significantly depending on unforeseen circumstances. Target distances (excepting the final stage as mentioned above) will be announced. It is possible, however, that we may include during one stage a "sudden appearance" target simulation, where the team will draw a card or other such randomizer while on the clock, and the distance to that target will be announced only at that moment. The clock will start, and the shot solution will need to be worked out on the clock (as with real targets of opportunity in the field, of course).

We're still working on the logistics of these stages, and may announce further info as it comes available.

stage 7 will involve both shooters simultaneously engaging 4 targets (prone position) at ranges from 600 to 1000 yards, with 2 minutes for set up time and engagement, unlimited shots (not to exceed total of 50 shots for entire match). Plates will be scored as hits or no-hits at end of 2 minute period. No counting shots here, just shoot till you hit. It doesn't matter which team member hits which targets--all 4 must simply be hit no matter who ends up hitting them.

stage 8 will be the bonus stage... that will be the trajectory ranging stage. If the team has any rounds left over after stage 7 (mentioned above), they can use them to trajectory range a target of unknown size and unknown distance, which will be placed by the land owner at a location unfamiliar to even those who shoot with us regularly. This trajectory ranging "bonus stage" will as mentioned earlier be scored based on number of shots needed to determine the estimated range of the target, and also scoring will be based on how close to the actual range the target is.

So round count should be 50 rounds max per shooter...

Weather forecast is looking nice so far. :)

Dan, do the stage 7 targets need to be engaged in any particular order?

On the 7th stage, I think we'll let the teams decide whether to command fire targets in order from nearest to farthest, or to split them and have one team member engage 2 targets while the other takes the other 2. We need to of course let the spotters know which targets to be watching, so the teams will just need to let us know how they're planning on engaging the 4 targets (and we may decide to have 5 targets instead of 4... still in planning)...

Catered meal will be BBQ chicken breast sandwich, baked beans, and the best homemade mac & cheese you've ever had (seriously, it is, bring a sample bowl of your grandma's so we can prove it to everyone else ;) :) )...

Stage 8 (bonus stage) TRAJECTORY RANGING:

team will start with 100 points, and will then use knowledge of rifle trajectory to determine range to a target of unknown distance, and uncertain size.

Each shot fired on the target will deduct 10 points from the 100 bonus points. AT LEAST ONE TEAM MEMBER MUST HIT THE TARGET AND BOTH MEMBERS MUST SHOOT AT LEAST ONCE AT IT

The team will then announce to the r/o what they believe the actual range to the target is. The number of yards they are off from the actual target range (determined by 2 or more Leica or better rangefinders) will then be deducted from their 100 bonus points.

Example:

The team members each shoot at the target two times. That's -40 points from the 100 point bonus.

The team estimates that the target range is 565 yards, when the actual range is 580 yards. That's -15 more points, for a total of 55 points off the 100, or 45 bonus points (a good score, we believe). Range will be estimated to closest 5 yard increment.

So that's how it'll work. We hope to see many of you there Saturday.

Dan

I'm not sure on the 308 team count... there will be a few I'm sure, and some teams will consist of a 308 and some other rifle, but to win the top 308 prize both team shooters would have to be using a 308 chambered rifle. The last I heard two guys from Team Bushnell (Jon Lester and Clark Kennedy) were planning on shooting 308's, but that could have changed since I last spoke with them.

Stage 7 will be a 2 minute command fire in order on 5 targets. We're going to have the teams command fire in target order to ensure most accurate hit calls from the spotters, and this will allow us to have at least 3 spotters on each of the 5 targets as the team goes from 720, 760, 860, 930, and ~965 yards for this series of targets. No shot limit on these, but if the team runs out of ammo (total of 50 shots per shooter for match) they won't have any ammo left for the trajectory ranging bonus stage... so there will be some strategy involved.

Weather and wind are looking great... so it doesn't look like we'll be giving any of these stickers out Saturday:  :D

We'll have both shooters on the rock fence south of the silo, side by side, both likely spotting through their own rifle scopes. If the team chooses to use the time to man a spotting scope, then switch shooters to achieve the objective for the stage, that'll be fine.

On another note: I-77 is likely to have some traffic issues at the West Virginia line... anyone coming down the WV Turnpike should check out the situation of the fire in the East River Mountain tunnel, as per how it might affect southbound traffic (the fire was in the north side, and they say it could be closed "for days")... bad situation.

UPDATE: Northbound side of tunnel could be closed for 'days' aft - WVVA TV Bluefield Beckley WV News, Weather and Sports

Already sitting at the subway... Really sucks that 77 is closed down. The alternate route was about 30 minutes longer for me, so make sure you guys plan for that if 77 does not reopen in the next few hours.

The latest report says it may reopen sometime tonight.

Thanks for letting us come out to shoot with you all.

Sean

You guys run a great match. Thanks for letting us play on your range.

Thanks to you and all the folks that helped out. BTW, thanks to the folks that put lunch together, it was great.

I am extending an invite to you to come out to Missouri and shoot in one of our matches sometime.

Thanks again.

Sean

Had an awesome time and glad my partner got to shoot his first match with you all at the Bangsteel facility. Super proud of the new partner as we didn't give up any points until the last/bonus stage (which kicked our butts!).

Congrats Jon and Clark for an awesome win! Jon, I guess I was too dumb or deaf to pick up on the rock comment. You sir, are a truly awesome guy.

:D Oh yeah, the cow pie... we step in 'em all the time. What I hate worse is when I'm out on the ATV and run through some and the tires throw crap all over me. :/

Anyway... top 10 teams are as follows:

Lester/Kennedy
Haggerty/Masters
Melvin/McPeak (tied for 2nd place, just 10 pts behind winners)
Parker/Smith
Fisher/Porter
Meadows/Litz
Houck/Lance
Price/Bowers
France/Newberry
Sneed/Crist

We had some really close races near the top 5, so this could have gone anyway at all... some great shooting going on, for sure.

I'll get some pics together and post 'em later...

Thanks to all who turned out, and especially to the r/o's and cooking staff. :)

Dan

What a great match again. We had teams travel as far as Missouri and Montana for this one. Mixed it up with a few std an a few new things so it was exciting. Dan really has a nice place and it is always good to see the regulars and the new guys under those conditions. We would also like to thank the folks at Triton Arms for the prize table contributions as well as Bushnell , AI and JP for the goods to bring this home. I personally never thought cleaning stages out to 1k with a 20" 308 would be possible but this AI AT is really something, and that JP of Clark's now has 2 in a row !

As you guys know I'm an incurable 308 fan. :) I was glad to see the cartridge do what it was intended to do in the hands of a lot of guys who know how to work 'em. :)

308 team rankings:

Lester/Kennedy
Meadows/Litz
Lance/Houck (tied for 2nd with same score of 500 points)
Price/Bowers (just ten points behind the 2 teams ahead of them)
Sneed/Crist
Debonis/Wymer
Phares/Phares

Here are some pics...

Thanks again Dan and company for hosting yet another awesome event. As always, I had a blast, both literally and figuratively I suppose.

Probably wont get back down to shoot any more until the Gaurdian, so until then, you guys take care.
