What is your opinion on it being mandatory? Punishable by jail time if you fail to show. I thought this was America? I was called for duty in 2015 and again for upcoming 2018. I understand they call from the voter registrations. But ive been called twice now in less than 3 years and my boss' wife hasnt been called in over 12 years. And she votes every year and has voted every year since she was 18. Has only been called once in her life. And is 38. I only started voting 3 1/2 years ago. Im 33. How is that "random"? We live in a county with a population of roughly 60,000. I asked other people my age if theyve ever been called for jury duty, and all of them said no. Im guessing because they dont vote. If my "reward" is getting to do jury duty every year for voting, im going to say fuck it and not vote. Or file some kind of complaint? I think jury duty should be volunteer/optional when you register to vote. Some people love it. Others hate it. Not to mention the pain in the ass it is with the job. And working out of the county is no longer a "valid" excuse here. Which I do every week. And youre compensated pennies. If youre going to make me lose hundreds of dollars by forcing me to do jury duty, match what Im going to lose! Stick that $5-$15 up your ass. Times are tough.

If it were up to me I would not allow anyone working or not retired to be seated on a jury.
Even passing those qual's, they would have to take a competency test, an fully understand the term "Jury Nullification". This country has been taken over via stupid, lazy, an easily swayed jury's by high priced mouth pieces an judges with an agenda.

I was called once and was released because of work. I regret that. There are a lot of morons out there and if I were on trial Id want someone like me on the jury because Im going to go with whats right, not whats convenient. The money aside, thats the system we're working under and I consider it a solmen responsibility to my fellow man.

I've been seated on four different juries over the years. For the most part, I thought they were all shitshows for various and sundry reasons. One of the first thoughts to cross my mind was that if I ever did break the law, the first thing I would want as a defendant is a trial by jury. You could put 12 adults into a room with nothing but a table, chairs and a clock on the wall. It never occurred to me that you could ask each person what time it was and you would get at a minimum, six different answers, maybe as many as twelve. First time jury duty is a real eye opener.
Having said all that, I echo Mag's sentiment above. As citizens, we owe it to society and to ourselves. It is part and parcel to the democracy we live in. The alternatives are far less palatable.

While I'm not sure how I would fix the jury system, it is currently broken. A defendant either gets 12 people who were't smart enough to get out of jury duty, or people who aren't his/her peers. My peers are people who work/worked for their living, not mall rats, or third generation welfare cases. I can even understand people who get called for jury duty not wanting to answer the probing, personal questions that attorneys ask.
The bigger problem is that I don't know what the solution is. Maybe giving attorneys more leeway in selecting people who actually ARE peers of the defendant...but then the prosecution would complain.

I've been called but released because of being LEO. I've seen first hand how members are picked. Each side is trying to choose those that think will vote for their side. As an example I was a lead investigator for a child molesting case and a "redneck good ol boy" was seated. I questioned the prosecutor because I was afraid "rednecks" could be anti-police. Prosecutor thought that most "rednecks" hate child molesters. Redneck was chosen, she was right and we got a convection. Each side has mental lists of who they think will sympathise for their side. Nothing but a game.
As to pay, I might be wrong but I thought your job was required to pay the difference between what jury pay is and what your normal pay would be. Most employers have that written into their employee handbook.

The last time I went to Jury Duty, I filled out a questionnaire asking about my job (retired SF), income level (a lot), education (Master's plus), and group membership (NRA, DAV, SF assoc.). There were about 75 potential juror's and after adjourning for the defense and prosecution to review the forms, we were each given a number. The numbers were the order in which we were to be interviewed. They were rank-ordered with the lowest, first to be called, as the individuals who were most likely to be satisfactory to both defense and prosecution. I was number 75.
When questioned by the judge or lawyers, I always say I just "know" who is guilty and who isn't. Just a feeling I get, don't need to listen to the evidence. For some reason, I'm always dismissed.
I think your assumption is incorrect. It certainly is incorrect here. A lot of people seem to believe that, however. When we got married 25 years ago, my wife was not registered to vote. Her reason was the same as yours - didn't want to be called to jury duty because "they use voter registration to call you to jury duty." I registered when I was 18 and have stayed active ever since, so I disapproved of her refusal to register. Several years went by and...she got called to jury duty. Never registered. After that she didn't have an excuse so I made her register (she didn't object any more anyway), and she has stayed active ever since, and has never been called since.
Im well aware of the jury nullification powers. And im going to make that clear in my interview. If this is a case of minor drugs or petty crime, Im going to let it be known. Our prison systems are too flooded with minor crap. And Ill let the other jurors know of the power they hold. I dont believe a person should face prison time for selling weed. Community service and fines are sufficient enough for that. Meth, cocaine and heroine are different. And prescription pills. Id throw the book at them.

It may be different in your county. But in mine, they feed off the voter registration. They even tell you that in the letter they send.
Yes, it is different here then. Your initial post said that you "understood" that they call from registration, not that you had actual proof. I took that to mean something different, as in someone told you, etc, as was the case with my wife. It was not true.
I got it twice in 2017. Once for county court, which I was told the night before we didn't need you then a few months later for city. Since the county didn't use me, I was valid for the city court and was dismissed after lunch that day.

I been called, let the guy go, I knew he did what he did but they charged felony, he stole $600 in scrap copper wire from a scrap collection point. No need throwing the guy in jail for 6 months for his family to go on welfare. Thought the charges were too harsh, I told the other jurors that a few got pissed and wanted to convict the guy but I basically told them I wont do it and that my work actually paid me time and a half for doing my civic duty so the longer we were there the better for me. Gotta do your civic duty.

I have been called once. It was clear that they were angling to eliminate all college-educated from the jury, so I knew I would not make the cut (2 Master's degrees). But partway through I revealed I had a scheduled work trip halfway across the country in the way and they let me go; I didn't know that was a good enough excuse not to do my duty so had been willing to cancel.
The whole thing was such a waste because the dude had his whole felony recorded on state video surveillance....

So the victim, in this case, the scrap dealer, got no restitution, because you didn't want to punish a thief.
He likely would have been given probation and required to pay a fine, which, of course, he would have stolen more shit in order to pay the fine. But then again, you're okay with that.

I had to sit through two months worth of grand jury hearings when I got called to jury duty. The fact that I come from a military background, am college educated and active LE didn't seem to matter. But then again being that it was GJ hearings, maybe thats just what the prosecutors were looking for.
Another thing that a lot of people don't think of is that these criminals are out committing crimes in their communities, why wouldn't you want a chance to make them answer up for their crimes?

Nullification is powerful tool against the judicial industrial complex aint it. Arresting officer commented on the polite disposition of the perp when he was asked by the defense lawyer. Just an update. Received my THIRD jury duty letter in the mail today for 2018. Both were canceled the morning of. But, I had to arrange with work to be absent those days, and then it gets canceled. Now I have another coming up in less than 2 weeks. This is getting absurd. In a county of 60k+ people, how can I get called 3 times in 1 year? No matter if I serve or not. NOBODY gets 3 letters in one year. Some never get a letter in their lifetime!
Im tempted to call the local sheriff and voice my displeasure. Im definitely writing the bailiff who sent me the letter.
