I was thinking about this today at work, and it really started bugging me...

Why does no one make .22lr bullets boat-tailed or spitzer-shaped? They make .17 bullets like that, do they do that for .22 mag rounds? It's bugging me like crazy right now. There has to be a reason why it's not the way it is. The only con I could think of would be cost and they probably wouldn't load well in tube-mag rifles.

I have been wondering the same thing! it would be interesting to see a box of FMJ BT .22LR. If done correctly though you could get some insane accuracy out of them but prices would be sky high!

There is some company out there that has them on their website, but I don't believe they have been brought to market yet. I'll try to find the page.

I think it would be really cool if someone casted their own ballistic tip .22lr rounds, yanked the lead out of some Wolf Match, and replaced it with their homemade ballistic tip. What a sight that would be!

i emailed the "company" i think it's some kind of farce, as they say they are not manufacturing it and some other not-so-company-like bull.

this is the email i got back:
"hi top
the ammo will become available once the usa ammo shortages are over as there is no spare production capacity in the world.
as soon as its ready i will keep you updated.the infantry is a great round to shoot as it really is very aerodynamic .
thanks for the email"

that was back in dec. of 2009

did some more research, there is no way of getting any of this ammo, it just doesn't exist. when i emailed the "company" again to order it directly, they said they were "out of powder used to manufacture the ammo." i asked about a price (at least) i got back that "it depends on the going rate of raw materials used to produce the ammo at current market rates."

it woulde be REALLY cool if hornady put out a vmax bullet in .22lr, but as far as the other "company" mentioned above, it seems as if it doesn't exist.

Funny you should mention Hornady I was just thinking the same thing about a week ago as to why they don't put out a Vmax .22LR round. Has anyone tried contacting Hornady (or any other RF company) to see if this is in the works?

as it was brought up before, theoritically, the .22lr is a heeled bullet that sticks out past the edges of the casing and the cost of putting a 22 vmax in a .22lr casing may too expensive to produce as far as tooling up goes. on the flip side, that was the same argument that was going on about the .17hmr during it's development.

however if they can do it in a .22 mag, i can't see why they can't stick it in a .22lr.

i know that i would pay for the type of performance hornady and the vmax bullet have historically produced on paper or game. hell, any hornady .22lr would probably be outstanding whatever head they top it off with.

The 22 mags case diameter is larger than the bullet dia.
Either the the .22 LR needs to be rechambered or the bullet will not fill the bore.
Or we could all buy new barrels and have 21LR with the case the same size and the bullet smaller to get away fron the heeled bullet design.
Then the cost of the bullet would increase the cost of the cartridge

I appreciate the thinking, but I also think the idea defeats the core beauty of the .22LR; and that is its simple, economical excellence. It's been around a long time, and ideas such as these have popped up more than once. The proof of this pudding is in the eating. If the idea had any real legs, we'd see evidence of it on the shelf to this day.

I'd also like to know why most of the "hollow point" rounds have such small cavities. Is this just to keep the drag as low as possible? I've noticed that my Federal CPHP don't expand rapidly, or very well, on things that aren't rock hard. Do they make larger-cavity hollow points? I wonder if anyone produces a special self-defense or small game hollow point...

Good point. And I agree, but then there are match grade rounds that cost insane (for .22 LR) amounts of cash...why not at least make the "ultimate" round available? People (at least this people) would buy it. Besides, man is ever seeking to improve; like Porsche (?) says..."...in pursuit of perfection..."

Winchester "expert" hollow points do have a larger HP with a thin
nose they expand very well at their low veloicity on small ground squirrels.
Used to be able to buy them at wal mart, pretty accurate too in a couple of my rifles.

The use to be an outfit that sold a device that slid over the nose of the bullet and one filed the nose flat. It was suppose to have outstanding terminal performance on whistle pigs. There was another that allowed you to make your own hollow point. I don't even remember where to start looking for the units....Sinclair or ???????

What do you expect to get out of these? A BC that increases to .200? from .130.

The reason the .17 calibers are jacketed is they have to be. You can't shoot lead bullets faster than 1700-1800fps, the lead melts to the bore.

Thanks clodhopper, I will have to get me some of those Winchesters. My nephew loves to see me shoot at fruit, and thinks it's the coolest thing to see them disappear.

In all honestly, if you can improve on something, someone will want it. I know I would.

Mtgoat, I believe I saw a tool when I was looking on the internet last night that bores out a larger hollow point. IIRC, you slip it over the nose of the bullet and insert a specially made die into a cordless drill. Something to that effect.
