Just finished my Quad

Just got done with my Quad. Gunsmith refinished everything, and I just put it back together and mounted the scope.

Specs on the build:

Sako Quad receiver
Mike Rock Barrel chambered, threaded and contoured by Longrifles, melonited after machining
U.S. Optics scope base
DIP Products triggerguard
DIP Products bolt knob (shortened by my gunsmith)
McMillan HTG TEX stock
TPS lightweight rings - lowest rings I could find anywhere
Leupold Mark 4 10x scope

Gunsmith parkerized the receiver and shot the whole works in Norrells Moly Resin. Ready to get it to the range.

How long is that barrel? Also how do you like that stock on this type of rifle? Gun looks amazing!

Thanks! Glad you like it. Barrel is 18" long, works great with a suppressor - not too long with it screwed on. As to the stock, I wanted something different. I have several of the McMillan A series models, but never bought the original M40 style. It feels great on the shoulder and off a bi-pod, and I think the trimmer proportions fit the Quad better than the larger stocks. I got tired of trying to decide on a color, let the wife pick this one.

Well, I finally got to the range today, and I was shocked. The rifle printed three consecutive five shot groups at or under 3/4" at 100 yards with CCI Standard Velocity. Afterwards, we shot some steel at the same distance. Having just shot .308 and .223AI, it seemed like forever until the rimfire hit the steel at that distance.

What can you guys tell me about the Anschutz Match chamber on these Longrifles barrels? I assume everybody got the same chamber? Anyway, it was difficult to chamber CCI Standard Velocity, but some Lapua and Eley I had chambered far easier. It was like the bullet was oversize for the throat. I ejected a loaded round, and the rifling was firmly engraved on the bullet. I love the accuracy, but I have several cases of the CCI as it is my go-to 22lr. I don't want to have to shoot Lapua or Eley - it takes the economy out of a trainer for me anyway. I have three different lots of the CCI that I can try. I'm wondering if I got an oversize lot maybe?

Anyway, just trying to see if this is normal for this match type of chamber, or if I have an ammo issue.

My bolt closes hard when I put too little,headspace between the bolt and barrel. I usually keep mine tight though. I haven't noticed too much difference in bolt resistance between brands.

If you put the barrel on, the headspace might not be in spec.

Well, I didn't think of that... I had thought the headspace was set by the funky machined breech. Is it adjustable, or do you install the barrel with a go gauge or ???

ETA: Just tried to drop a round in the chamber to use as a pseudo headspace gauge, and it stops roughly in the same place as to where the bolt is difficult to place fully in battery. The CCI Standard Velocity stops tight maybe .10-.15 short of fully chambering. I can't push the round in far enough with my fingers to fully chamber.

You should use a gauge but I don't. I usually just let the weight of the barrel push down on the closed bolt and then tighten the barrel screw. It's seemed to work ok for me so far.

Did Chad put a bit of a feed ramp on your barrel?

The bottom of the chamber is slightly relieved. I don't know that I would call it a traditional ramp, but the bottom edge is just broken.

ETA:
Well, looks like I found the "problem." Looks like the Anschutz Match chamber doesn't play well with the CCI Std Vel. From these earlier posts on the Hide, it appears to have been discussed before. I do not have the extraction problem mentioned here, but my ammo looks identical to the linked photo when placed in the chamber.

I got ya. My factory sportier barrels shoots great so I would imagine that a varmint would do the same.

I've never heard of any problems with the barrel change feature, that wouldn't be a concern for me. These are so sweet, handle like a full-sized rifle, and the triggers are very fine.

I would get in touch with Chad, but the barrel has been melonited. I don't believe it could be machined given the surface hardness.

I'm just going to sell it and get a Sako barrel.

If you are planning on shooting Standard Velocity and your current barrel shoots it at 3/4 MOA at 100, I'd deal with the tough chambering. Standard Velocity is NOT 3/4 MOA ammo.

I'd normally agree as my Anschutz and Kimber did not shoot this lot quite as well, but still held in the .8's and .9's. If you ever run into CCI Std Vel lot G19N08 and weight and dimensionally sort it you might have something exceptional.
