Movie Theater Justified season 5

Anybody see last night's episode? They manged to fit a bunch of good stuff in. I like that Art got more screen time this episode. Nick Searcy is the man.

Yeah I heard that too. Walton Goggins said in one interview that they were treating S. 5 & 6 like one long season. I'm glad they're doing that, though. Good shows have to know when to quit.

I read about next season being its final on sitcoms online sorry to see it go because unlike Sons Of Anarchy this show never got ridiculous I just hope they don't rush everything in order to close up storylines.

The writers have been foreshadowing two events all season (possible spoiler warning):

1. Something bad was going to happen to Art. The marshalls spoke of his upcoming retirement in three or four episodes, which was the clue something was going to derail that plan.

2. Raylan was going to get in that redhead's britches. From the instant Wendy flashed him her tramp stamp, you KNOW Raylan could not get his caveman brain off having a closer look.

One of those came to pass this week, but the other is unfinished bidness. With Darryl beating the hell out of her and her son facing prison for something Darryl did, I think it's time for Raylan to make his move. He gets to her to get Kendal to roll over on Darryl.


Speaking of spin-offs, they are spinning off "Better call Saul" from Breaking Bad, starring Bob Odenkirk. And I think Aaron Paul has been offered to reprise the Jesse Pinkman character. Not sure if it will still be dramatic or if they're going comedic.

Aaron Paul, BTW is making the TV talk show rounds, hawking his new fillum, Need For Speed. He's the "Star in our reasonably priced car" in an early episode of this season of Top Gear. I won't spoil it for you but I will say that sumbitch can drive!

Mr. Dobbs.. that was a great run he had on Top Gear.

My prediction is that the teenage boy Crow is going to end up hooking up with the little teenager Weed dealer that Raylan watches out for... from the "Applejack" season. Those two are just made for each other.

Art is going to end up in bad shape if not dead. It's like a police cliché rule. Talk to me Goose... Goose? Oh Goose... ok, I get it. Family retirement guy is going to buy it. No predictability there. I did sort of expect better from Elmore Leonard's protégé's... but maybe they'll surprise me. That DEA guy with the now-broken pelvis is also a new character perhaps destined to re-surface.

Some of my semi-coherent thoughts on the show after watching the last episode:

I have been so pleased with the writing and acting in Justified. The lines and delivery are so good. It never goes all the way over to a comedy or all the way to soul-sucking "dark" or depressing show with no redeeming qualities. It mixes comedy, good and evil, and content to make for a very enjoyable time.

Boyd is played perfectly by Walter Goggins, freaking love his character. He is cool even when he is scared. Loved the Semtex cigarettes. He was great in the Shield, and much easier to hate too!

I would be sad to see Art go out like this especially with the state of the relationship between him and Raylan. Art has to be the best "boss" character ever.Sucks that he is the only male role model Raylan probably had for a long time worth anything. Having that relationship taken away may either make Raylan re-examine his own role as a Father/Husband or become more of a bastard. The ambiguity of Raylan is interesting and at times annoying. It's probably a good thing he is not cast as one type of person. Keeps things fresh. On the other hand it keeps you wanting to know "who is this guy at his core?" It's not simple or well-defined which makes it interesting but also a bit tiresome.

I hope they can round the show out with out ever giving it away completely but also giving us some good clues or insight. Will he end up with Winona again and be in his daughter's life or leave a void in her life like his daddy did in his? Will he ever leave the Marshal service alive? Will he paint that redhead's tail red? All valid and equally important questions. :)

For Boyd, obviously the final season is going to have to focus on his relationship with two or three key people:

1. Winn Duffy on the business side. Winn is a turd, but you kinda gotta love him.

2. Obviously Eva. Her predicament is rough, she just keeps getting deeper. Amazing that she never shows any regret for choosing Boyd and his lifestyle.

3. Raylan. They have always had such an interesting dynamic that has ebbed and flowed throughout the show. Sometimes it's like they are just playful ex-coal diggn' buddies, with nothing else between them but being on opposite "teams". Other times Boyd gets that mean rattler look and Raylan seems like he would just as soon shoot Boyd again as look at him. Again, great writing and acting.

Really like Tim and Rachel, the two Marshals that are kind of Raylan's buddies. Tim is a stud, I want to see him use that long gun more! "I love this shit, makes me hard."-Tim on Raylan eluding him! Ha.

Even the characters who appear for one or two episodes or seasons are just perfect. Dewey Crowe is a long time favorite of mine, born to lose white-trash that is almost content in his stupidity.

I like Boyd's thugs this season. Hard and mean and loyal.

Dicky Bennet is always spot on with his snively, not so charming tough guy act.

Constable Bob is hilarious as a seemingly quintessential mall-cop/ninja who turns out to have a lot of grit in his "go bag."

...and too many others to count. Even the worst people you hate and loath because they are so mad-dog crazy always get what's coming to them, which is very satisfying.

Anyways, one of my favorite shows of all time for sure. I kinda want to read some of the original author's books, apparently a lot of the humor and great writing comes directly from his novels on Raylan.

As I've been plowing through military history texts the last 18 months, my better half has read almost all of Elmore Leonard's stuff. And the books are every bit as good as the series, she says. Another few months and I can return to reading for fun... and I'll definitely open up some of Leonard's writing.

Ellston Limehouse, the butcher, BBQ man and 'banker' up in the Nobles Hollow has to be one of the great characters of all time as well.

Maybe I'm just falling for the old Post Hoc fallacy but I've thought the script-writing has slipped a tad since Elmore died. But supposedly he'd only ever had a tangential involvement in the show's production, more of a touchstone than a writer.

I get disappointed in the writing any time I can guess what's about to happen (probably the key reason I was such a Monty Python fan). The second episode they brought up Art's retirement in, I thought they'd gone too far. But then they did it again. Too clumsy, they were feeding the lowest common denominator. But I think character development and acting tends to ebb and flow more from the rotating directors than any other factor.


Walter Goggins showed up in an episode of Sons of Anarchy as a transvestite hooker with HUGE bazooms. It took me a while to place the face because he didn't speak with the same slow, measured cadence that defines Boyd. And I was preoccupied trying to figure if this was a real tranny and them HUGE bazooms were real. When I finally placed him, I nearly had a seizure laughing so hard.


I've mentioned this in other threads but if you like the Raylan Givens character, and you want to treat yourself to some truly extraordinary dialog, you need to watch HBO's old series "Deadwood." Olyphant also plays a lawman who is quick with his fists and his guns (both of them). There's a whole lotta Marshall Seth Bullock in Deputy Marshall Raylan Givens. Also famous for maintaining 1.56 f-bombs per minute over 33 episodes (yes, somebody actually counted).

I agree. I think that Elmore kept them honest is the noir/hard boiled genre, and that since he involvement lapsed (and the show runner is keeping a keener eye on The Americans), their idea of "upping the stakes" has been to have more and more outlandish story lines, that have less personal repercussions.

Take it from a guy who edits TV for a living, nothing sucks more than a bad script.

I like Walter Goggins as an actor too, not as a tranny. LMAO. I was surprised to see him playing that part in SOA. I yelled a big Hells Yeah when he pulled the Semtex out on Picker Tuesday night. Great Scene!

I also read that we wont be seeing Art this coming Tuesday, however, he does not die. He appears again in the next episode. Great series, ill be disappointed if it ends after this season.

I have to say, the only perfeshunal akter I ever heard get paid for butchering a Southern dialect worst than Michael Rappaport was John Turturo. Only Turturo did it twice, in Secret Window and Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?

I liked the way Darryl got set up... He was so bugsh** about family, that having his sister pop him in the n**sack was just classic.

I am surprised that they didn't hook the kid up with the little teenage weed dealer from the Applejack season. That would have been an interesting character pairing...

A great season. I want Constable Bob to come back, though. He'es the best character in the whole series.
