I have been looking at buying a M1A/M14 for a while. But I can't justify it. I have a .308 bolt which I use for hunting and paper shooting. I really have a hard on for one..... But also looking around I can get two AR-15 (which I am very familiar with) for the price of a M1A.

Help...

While I really would like to have a M1A in a nice walnut stock sitting in my rack. I really only want this for decoration one might say. I really like how an AR preforms better then an M1A. So if you want something that is nice to shoot get an AR, if you want something that is really cool and can be made to shoot nice get an M1A.

Every Red blooded American should own at least one M14. Shop around for a pre-owned, mostly GI M1A selling at a discounted price.
Or, look for a less expensive deal on an unmolested Norinco/Poly Tech M14 or one that has a GI bolt conversion performed by SEI, WarBird or another qualified M14 armorer.
IMO, ChiCom M14s should be domesticated before you shoot too many rounds through them, but some shoot them as-is without problems. YMMV.

If you invest in quality, you won't lose your ass if you decide to sell it down the road and you will have a blast with it while you own it.

Buy a LaRue OBR and get the best of both worlds, I like my M1A but I also really like my friend's OBR. Of course the OBR is as expensive as a nice M1A so it's basically a wash. I just can't get over how accurate the OBR is!

Can you afford it?


If so, buy it. If not, don't. It's really that simple.

If you have to incurr debt to get it, then pass.

If I stop with the near-beer and cigs while I am here I could actual save up enough extra cash to get a M1A and justify it with my lady.

Do yourself a favor and research known QC issues and issues with some of the reproduction parts used to build M1As after SAI ran out of USGI parts.


I cut back on extra curricular activities, saved up, sold my Bushmaster Dissipator and purchased my one and only Springfield M1A in 2001. The brand new $1100.00 Scout I purchased was built with zero USGI parts and to my dismay, it required four warranty repairs before firing 500 rounds and then a trip to Arizona for a 5th repair before firing 800 rounds. SEI got it right, but I parted it out anyway and now have a collection of custom built M14s, all of them built by SEI on ChiCom receivers... that's another chapter for later.


My M1A experience is not typical and I am not saying all recent M1As are bad... as I said: every Red blooded American should own at least one M14... I'm just encouraging you to do your homework and a little research <span style="font-weight: bold">before</span> you jump in with both feet. You and your lady will be happy that you did.

here is how you justify it. do you have one like it already? no? then get it. see how it works for both the M1A and the AR15? plus has 10/22 to LR308 capabilities, works with up to a 50 cal barrett

I don't know you, but it seems to me that you will eventually have an M1A and a AR someday.

So I say pick one to start with, maybe an AR since it can be had cheaper then when your gun ADD really kicks in you'll be cool with the semi auto thing and save for your M1A.

I don't have an M1A yet, but I will. Some of the rigs I've seen here on the hide are sexy as hell. H20's got some nice ones. I'm not ready with the funds yet but in the next couple years I'll jump in.

Best be careful browsing around this site. Since I joined I've tripled my rifle purchases, lol. There is no shortage of cool rigs and practical ideas... can get a bit pricey.

Either way you go it'll be tons of fun. Good luck.

Personally, the only thing wrong with an AK is it's not a .308. But they do make .308 Saiga's. Shop around, maybe $500-ish. Not a battle rifle, but relatively reliable and reportedly hunting accurate out to at least 400yd with decent ammo.

I don't do .308 anymore, but I do like the .30-'06, and if I didn't already own a Garand, I'd be well into acquiring a Saiga 100 (Mod 102, .30-'06; assuming they ever actually materialize here stateside).

I have had mine for a year now it's a not a national match, but I wouldn't give it up for the world. Even my girlfriend loves the rifle and everyone I know that sees it says its sexy as is. Not to mention when I take it to the range and get an old Vet to smile when they see it.

+1 with the every American should own one, they should be issued at birth!

I loved my 'Loaded' stainless barrel M1A. It shared the stable with my DCM Issue Grade Garand, and Colt Match Target AR. I have since moved on. Only the Garand remains.

Oh, and yes, about a half dozen 10/22's have come, evolved, and moved on (the best one remains), and my 3 SKS's are now but one.
