I have a CE41 (J.P. Saur & Sohn, Suhl Germany - 1941) Mauser K98K, I've been thinking for a long time on putting it into an early war sniper configuration, it looks period correct for the most part other than a pre war flat butt plate and a milled solid front band, all easily fixed with minor amount of effort, I've been to accumounts website, and have seen all the models of bases they offer, not sure what set to go with though, I'm finding myself partial to the turret style mounts, and a Zielever scope or at least a repop until an original shows up for the right price, need advice, tech support, general knowledge on my configuration type as well as personal experince with accumount or original mounting types.
Thanks
Kevin

Re: K98 possible project

Low, or high turret mounts will require the scope to be disassembled and soldered to the rings-Same for any of the claw type mounts.

Swept back mount or either the long or short side rail will require the stock to be altered for the mount base but the scope will install into the respective rings without requiring disassembly or soldering.

I choose the short side rail for my project as that involved the least amount of work to complete.

Re: K98 possible project

Other than ease of mounting does one style hold preference over another, I"m ok with having to dissassemble and solder the scope if there is an advantage to the mount I'm doing it for, one reason I'm looking into the turrets is that they look like a good solid mount, the reciever mount side rails I hear can be a bear to tune in for windage, and the scout/rear site side rail ZF-41 type scopes aren't really an option for me as they don't offer much over open sights from what I understand

Re: K98 possible project

JP Sauer and Sohns made K 98 actions. Very fine ones. Both mil and commericial. As did Kreighoff and many others. BTW any Saur or Kreighoff action is an excellent basis for a custom Mauser Sporter.

I think that the turret mounts would be the most solid- but from what I understand they also have a windage adjustment that will have to be tuned in.
The ZF-41 style scopes are neat, and more accurate than you would think but are a lot of trouble to zero.

Re: K98 possible project

I suspected J.P.S&S'll make K98's during WWII, but have never seen one... I'd love to get my hands on one!!!! I'm not suprised that they made very good K98s, I love their 80-seris rifles... even more then 90 or 2000 series... One day I hope to own a Sauer 80... Darn expensive over here...

Apart from Mauser Oberndorf, Sauer and Sohn were the only other manufacturer of 98k's dating from 1934 "K" and "G" dated "unofficial" production through the full production years from 1936 onwards under the codes S147, 147, and then "ce" until disappearing sometime in 1944 - presumably as the result of the factory having an unfortunate encounter with some HE dropped from altitude?
