Well, I have a line on an SR-25 ECR, and it is fuck-all expensive, but I'm considering it hard. I have been searching the net high and low and can't find a review of one to save my life.

Preface- I know that Knights has a lot of fanboys and a lot of haters. I don't want to start this thread with the purpose of debating the VALUE of a $5,500 gas gun. I am considering it for a couple of reasons- I own a number of KAC products and while pricey, they all are quality. And they do hold their value. So, higher initial investment should still yield a reasonable cost of ownership, if/when I sell it.

My main concern- how accurate are these rifles? I have never read a report. I know they are cut rifled 5r stainless barrels, but that is about where it ends. This particular rifle has a 0.725" 5 round test target. If that is truly indicative of the typical performance with most match ammo, I'd be happy. This rifle will be used as a precision long range semi.

I'd be interested in hearing any thoughts you all have. I'm making a purchase decision by tomorrow morning.

Fantastic. That is what I wanted to hear. Does it shoot well with most all match ammo, or is it picky?

I'm interested in hearing more thoughts on reliability etc, as well as good old fashioned gun porn (pics!)

I don't own one right now but have quite a bit of time with the SR25 and all of them have been shooters. With some of the later advancements they have made, they are great rifles IMO. I am not a fanboy just my .02....

If you decide to run a can; you'll need to remove their proprietary fh if you want a can other than KAC but that's no biggie. I am not sure but I think they come with 45 offset sights as well and KAC makes some really good ones. Doesn't get much more proven and they just keep rfining them. I played with an ECC recently and it was SWEET! If memory serves me, they are vrtually the same except the ECR is 20 inches and isn't ball milled. Easy for me to spend your cash but I can't see you disappointed.

Magic question is; does this work in tandem with your new LMTLM8MWS or????

lol Ok here it goes:

Mine is serving dual purpose right now. Precision Rifle and 3 gun.


Precision Rifle:
Wears one of the newer Bushy HMDRs on it...just a great setup. For ammo I've run(so far) FGGM 175, Remington Match 175, and my own handload 175s(42.5gr varget etc etc). Eats it all and shoots any where from the .4's on up depending if I pull my head out of my ass and take my time.

3 Gun:
Wears a Aimpoint CompM4. And its a delight to shoot, fast, light. Amazing for having a barrel as long as it does. For ammo, I use my handloads for longer shots, and a combination of Radway Green and some other trash M80 ammo for shot range blasting. It just eats it up....no jams and I've got over a 1k through it so far. Did I mention I've only oiled it once at about 400 rounds so far :)

Mods.
Swapped out the stock for a normal magpul. Put on a AAC Muzzle brake for reduced recoil and to use my 762sd can on it occasional.

The only malfunction I've had is during a 3 gun match while resting the gun on the ground...someone must have kicked a couple of pebbles towards the rifle, as one got under neath the trigger and caused it to lock up till I removed it and found the pebble.

ECC is chrome lined.
ECR is steel cut rifled.

That is a major major difference in my opinion.

The sights are a big selling point for me. They are the sights I would purchase anyhow (although probably in a 300m, I don't see the point of a 200-600m adjustable in an offset, but anyway,) I have a couple of sets of standard Micro's and they are great.

As for the MWS... I don't know. The responsible thing to do would be to sell it. I don't really NEED a second .308 semi. HOWEVER, at the back of my head there is this nagging thought that keeps saying "the MWS would be SWEET in a 14" barrel with a red dot!!!" so we'll see. Obviously the purpose of this would be to replace the MWS in a precision capability.

Glad to hear. I would be putting an ACS on it in place of the SOPMOD. Might put a Surefire brake on as well. These are 5/8x24 unlike the older 3/4 models, right?

Nice! I haven't had the chance to really shoot my fluted 14.5 mws barrel but it sure is light and fast, escpecially with the LM8 receiver.

Sounds like you have a great plan! Blaster 308 and precision 308. Sure, you need 2 :).

ACS is what I put on mine. Nope still 3/4's :/

I've had the ECC for about 9 months Has never skipped a beat, shoots 1/2 MOA, has easy recoil from its rifle-length gas system, and has a chrome-lined bore and chamber so it's easy to maintain. Mine likes FGMM 168gr and the Federal American Eagle M1A 168gr match loading. My buddy, who attended a Costa multi-day heavy carbine class where there where a number of different guns, including LMT and LaRue, said the only guns that ran with zero problems were the two Knights. With the SR-25 platform being out there in troops' hands for a number of years now, I think that translates into greater reliability as feedback comes in and tweaks are made.

I not a "fan boy," but I do really like Knights rifles:

Similar but different - have an SR25 ER and briefly considered replacing it with either an ECR or an ECC. In the end I chose not to b/c there wasn't enough bang for the buck (the biggest advantage could be had by swapping out my PRS for a tele stock / sending it to Marvin Pitts to be threaded). My point is simply to say that the web is full of those with polarizing opinions on KAC and it is hard to get good info. I have had Armalite, DPMS, and GAP. *My* KAC shoots very well. More importantly it is reliable with Fed GM, BH, hand loads, surplus.

It isn't magic and I do have minor critisms about it, but I like it and intend to keep it.

Also given the listed weights of the commercial offerings I struggle to understand why most would choose an EC / ECC over an ECR. Good luck with your purchase and let the haters know how it shoots.

ETA - unless your trying to stay within a set of rules for a game, sell off the offsets and mount a T1 in the offset position.

I had two MWS's and I've shot a few SR25's. The SR25 is the softest shooting 308 semi I've ever fired, and the MWS is one of the hardest. Accuracy is negligible, they shoot the same. The KAC triggers are awesome.

I'd buy one if I could afford it.

Ok sorry for the quality I don't own any camera's just an iphone, here it is next to a CQBSS 1.1-8 for size comparison, I have the H27 leupy but the brightness of the dot on the premier just blows it away. Eyebox is TIGHT at 8x however, but all in all my favorite piece of glass.

Not an ecr, but its a Knights and it shoots great. I have only had one problem, fte's due to a weak extractor spring. It runs any thing I feed it and will shoot sub moa groups all day.

It was a 24" SR25 match made in '94. I had the barrel cut to 16", updated the handguard and added a surefire break. I guess you could say its closer to a ECC.

I have an EMC that I was lucky enough to get one of a handful of URXIII'S installed on. I also put the 45 degree sights and an ACS stock and Miad Grip. It's basically an ECC now. I really like the 3 over the 3.1. I believe only around 10 left the factory as it was a prototype. The 3.1 are very nice I just like the option of having the front sight hidden away. I run a KAC UNS LR/LP also so it works great. It's my one gun. I have a Bushy HDMR and an Elcan 1.5-6. The bushy is great due to the lack of rail space. I just can't wait for the MAMS and CQB can. I'm also running a factory EMC suppressor on it. It awesome. Softest shooting 16" 308 ever. Will be even better with the MAMS!!!

Its here! I snuck out of work to pick it up.

Intial impressions: fit and finish are excellent. Rifle definitely looks and feels "quality." I was pleased to find that the offset irons have a removable insert so that they can be zero'd with the more accurate small diopter and then opened up for the real purpose of offset irons- speed! It also comes through with a round count log, which is cool as hell. It shows 3 rounds for zeroing, 5 rounds for testing the accuracy, and 40 rounds for function testing. The zeroing and test target were shot with Remington match and the rest with 150 gr FMJ. It all shipped in a pretty decent hard case. It had all the accessories and some other documents, but I was in a rush to get back to work so that's all the intel I have for now.

It isn't done yet, but I figured I would post it up. In transit I have:

Leupold Mark 6 3-18 (Horus H58)
KAC 34mm mount
KAC MAMS brake
KAC 1 hole handstop

The added weight and length over the ECC is making me have this crazy thought- send the upper out to Marvin Pitts and have him ball mill the barrel, cut it back to 16", and ream the gas port. Then I'd have the only ECC that I know of with a stainless, non chrome lined barrel!

IIRC - the ball mill process saves right @ 8 oz. I'm guessing that you'd save another 3 or 4 oz chopping the tube.

Is it really a weight issue or a balance issue?


ETA:

If you engage Marvin about chopping the tube and reaming the port - will you post his thoughts on the matter?

Both. I imagine the weight savings should be about 20.5 ounces- the difference between an ECC and an ECR. The ECR has a SUPER heavy barrel behind the gae block, which I imagine is why the ball milling saves so much weight on the ECC vs ECR. I am doing it for both weight and balance. I don't want this rifle to be a prone only pig.

I sent Marvin an email, and I will definitely keep the board updated on the progress.

FYI that is not a Stainless barrel.

The ECC and ECR (and M110 etc) barrels are 4150 Ord steel 5R cut rifled.
The dif between the ECC chrome is it has a .308WIN chamber, while the non chrome guns have a KAC II chamber.

I've always wanted to dimple a 20" 7.62mm barrel - the difference between the EC and the ECC barrels are .5LB, and the EC has the same profile as the ECR but is 4" shorter.

IF you cut the barrel, I would not recommend opening the gas port - and if you do, it only need 0.001 addition...
