All around, I have a .223, and I am wanting to start doing long range shooting. I have also kicked around the idea of picking up a GAP FBI HRT.

there are no wrong answers. all three rifles are very capable systems (haven't shot the GAP but haven't heard anything that says otherwise). i'd also look at the LaRue OBR.

i was looking at them when i was looking for a semi in 308.

i like the 20 MOA they have built into the top rail.

the only reason i went with an armalite is because the price was too good to pass up.

Armalite is for sure the least expensive way to get an accurate AR-308. You can have a great target AR10 for less than $1,500. If money is not an object for you, then I would also suggest an OBR. Larue tets fires every gun and doesn't let it leave the shop if it does not shoot less than an MOA.

If funds are there, buy all three and keep the one that you like best. I have had an KAC SR-25, and was a great rifle, then i got a Surefire 7.62 can, and then got a LWRC REPR. Fit and finish as good as the KAC, and as accurate as most good bolt guns, and stone reliable with the can. Did a class with over 400 rounds without missing a beat. She was dirty, but still was shooting. My KAC would not have made it, I am sure. JPG

+1 About Larue Test firing their product, can't say the same about some of the others mentioned.

I wish that the funds were there for all three and the FBI HRT but they are not. So, I now have the very daunting task of trying to decide and compare apples to oranges to bananas. I know that the KAC is by far the most expensive and I don't know if the extra cash is going for components or name. I have also not heard anything but great reviews of the GAP which is the least expensive and then the LMT is the middle of the road and is only a couple of hours where I live...So many decisions, I just hope that I make the correct one.

I own the LMT MWS. There was an issue with a range of rifles they released where the chome didn't adhere well to their bolts. They fixed the problem. My experience with their customer service has been positive.

The rifle itself is a front-heavy, beefy, capable, and reliable. The accuracy is quite decent although I only use iron sights. The monolithic rail platform is really well machined and looks great.

If I was going to get another 308 AR, I think I would take another look at the GAP 10. I was biased against the rifle because I didn't quite like the look of the POF upper. However, it's made by a well regarded custom shop with excellent parts. It's also priced reasonably.

I was also lucky enough to hold a Larue OBR at a gun store a while ago. The canted top rail required an open jaw cheek weld for me. I'm not sure how that would affect me If I shot it. The entire rifle was well machined and put together. The rounded front hand-guard is also an excellent feature.

Frankly for the value in a target gun the Larue is hard to beat.

<span style="font-weight: bold">All three of those are great guns. As mentioned, the LaRue OBR is another great choice. The LMT adds the ability to quickly swap barrels & calibers, which is a pretty sweet feature. You might check out the Noveske N6 as well. </span>

I couldnt decide if i wanted a Gap-10 or a Larue OBR. I ended up getting a OBR and im very happy with it!

if I had 2k-3k to spend I'd get a GAP. Otherwise just build your own they aren't difficult. The one I built with flea market parts for <1500 has functioned 100% since day one and shoots MOA or better when I do my part.

Only b/c there isn't a lot written about KAC on this site - here is my first 1hr experience with a new to me KAC:

I paid slightly less for this gently used model from a trusted board member (SRT - thank you very much BTW) than what it would have cost me to either buy or build a .308 gaser set up like I wanted it; and short of a threaded muzzle - this is effectively what I wanted.

The trigger is 3 stage - yes they throw an extra stopping point in there for ya for free. There is also an 1/8" or so of vertical play in the receivers, no lateral - just vertical. The crown is also suspect on this one.

Now I am not a great shooter and it has been a while since I have shot an AR10. As you can see if I lean on the trigger it goes low. I will need to work on it.

OK here is the first group after zero (shots left are actually low due to orientation of the photo):

Here is 15 rounds with my M14 load (shots left are actually low due to orientation of the photo):

Here is a 5 and a 7 round with FED GM175s (I lost my sticky in the rain after the 5th shot and had to switch dots)again (shots left are actually low due to orientation of the photo):

As a comparison, here are a couple 5 round groups w/ my .300WM:

I have a lot of work to do in order to get better at shooting this weapon. However - it shoots a whole lot better than I can, and it chewed through 50 rounds without missing a beat (more than I can say for 2 other custom AR10s and 1 DPMS I had in the past). All in all - I am happy. Would I pay full boat for a new one? Eh...I don't think so. However I do think that if one can come across a used one that is a good value it is worth jumping on.

ETA - second time out - I got a few minutes to run out to the range. I shot the first 12 rounds reasonably well, then the phone rang I started thinking about who was on the other end and that I had to go. I dumped shots 13, 14, and 15 of the group. The thing shoots. I just need to improve my triple stage trigger skills.

ETA2 - today I shot at 700 and 1,100 on an IPSC sized steel. At 700 I was also shooting my AIAW - it gave up nothing against the AI, but it is much faster on the follow up shot. I was similarly impressed at 1,100. It isn't a burner - 2,553 fps / 43.8 of RE15 + 175 SMK, and it required 5.3 MILs at 700 and 12.3 at 1,100; but it makes hits

Yea they actually sell it without a test target. Sometimes they can't even be bothered to ship the invoice with the rifle either. Then when asked about it, they promise to make it right but fail to deliver on that as well.

Guess that's what happens when you develop such a "fan base".

Out of the 3 you named, I'd get the GAP in a heartbeat. I hope to have one of their gas guns soon! As others have stated, I wouldnt pass up a look at the OBR. I love mine.

Where did you get that GAP is the cheapest? A GAP-10 with the PRS stock and a brake will set you back over $3K which is within a couple hundred of the OBR. The GAP FBI HRT is over $4k+ as well and $1K more than the other 2. If any of those is the cheapest option it's the LMT. You should probably decide on gas or bolt 1st since their different breeds and have different options... My vote is GAP but I'm biased as I own the GAP-10 and it f#$kin awesome

There's something about getting what you want built to your <span style="font-style: italic">exact</span> specifications. Tight little groups at 100 yards is nice but doing it at 1/2 mile repeatedly is the great equalizer.

I think you got it wrong. The GAP Rock is a bolt action. Oh wait, I got what you mean

What has your experience been with the forward assist? Most 308 rifles don't have them.

I have to say that I really like the color coated GAP 10s. Is it Cerakote? I wonder what it would look like in OD green?

Yes...coyote tan cerakote. The forward assist is one of those nice to have items if you ever need to <span style="font-style: italic">quietly</span> chamber a round. It may not go fully into battery without it when you ease a round into the chamber.

Thanks...yes she is. Truth be told I was apprehensive about this purchase for no other reason than we've all made <span style="font-style: italic">some</span> purchase mistake on a piece of gear that turned out to be way over-hyped on the internet. With more than 1K rounds down the pipe I can safely say that this isn't one of them. And that's saying a lot considering that I had to send my upper back to have the chamber re-reamed. It has greatly exceeded my expectations.

ive always felt the sr25's were ridiculously overpriced. its not that they aren't good rifles. they are. but they really aren't any better than lmt, larue, gap, etc. sometimes you can find them used for a fair price, but many of the brand new ones are stupidly overpriced. just my two cents

I saw a gently used Noveske N6 on here just the other day for about 1/2 of what a new SR25 would cost.


IMHO - if you set 10 units from each manufacturer out for the same person to fire, folks would walk away thinking that they all 'shot about the same' - ie - better than most folks on this board.

Having shot both I think the GAP-10 and the OBR are equal in all areas including performance. It comes down to a personal preference between the two for you as a shooter. My advice would be to test drive both and pick the one you like the best. For me I just liked the feel of the OBR better YRMV. But like I said <span style="font-weight: bold">IF</span> there is a performance difference between those two I would love to meet the person who is good enough to exploit it.

This is my best 850 yd target to date the last time I was out. Not pretty but when you factor in winds it was amazing (at least to me). I'm still learning "wind" but on this day there was a fairly predictable 3-7 mph wind in my face gusting to 15. Shooting atop a 10' berm meant I had a slight updraft at my shooting position. Mid-flight, the wind dropping off the top of the pines would create a downdraft effect and about 2/3's distance to the target (top of the arc) was a 3/4's value crosswind varying from maybe 7-20. All of this internittent and changing constantly. I was happy just to hit the plate and all of them (15 I believe) made a stain. If you take the low flier out of the equation you can understand my satisfaction...

I've fondled a LMT several times and it reminds me of a PWS MK214 (that's a very good thing) I haven't yet fired a Larue but I did get to eyeball a custom camo'd one at the range and it looked well built to me. Armalite? I think its a little dated but all things considered I'd still own one. I'm not familiar with the MWS at all. What few realize is that precision .308 autos are still in their infancy...we haven't seen the best yet.

I have owned many different 308 AR type weapons. I have owned the SR25 EMC for around a year now and could not ask for anything better! It shoots super smooth and works wonderfully suppressed! I have not had any problems with KAC customer service either. They are top notch all the way. I have shot many side by side with the KAC and still can't believe how smooth and soft it is! Just my 2 cents! GYZ
