Sooo for the "average joe blow" shooter, what the "best bang for the buck" when it come to a Kestrel wind meter?
I would pay extra to be able to "sync" to my Android phone. Thanks

Kestrel is on Promotive so I've been looking at some of the Applied Ballistics with Link models?
Thanks

Kestrel 4000. It's the first model that has Density Altitude, and it's available with Bluetooth. They can be found at very reasonable prices new, and even cheaper used.

I also am interested in getting my first Kestrel. I will not be running an Applied Ballistics 5700 model, can't afford it right now. Is there any benefit then, in getting something higher than a 4000? I have the Shooter app, I'm thinking that without the AB model all I need is something to measure wind and DA? I don't mean to hijack this thread, I can start my own too..

I got a Kestral on herofish's GB. It's never yet helped me make a hit. Most likely I'm just not savy enough to get it, but I wish someone would make a DVD titled Kestral for the dumber marksman, that simplified it a bit.

Personally I think the 5700 with AB is the way to go. I don't personally think the Bluetooth is a necessity though I'm sure it's nice to have. As has been said, if you qualify for promotive pricing it's pretty nice.

I agree. And most know that I have wrestled with the "growing pains" since it's release (I bought one of the first ones) but now I would not trade it for anything.

The Bluetooth feature allows you to set it up on the optional wind vane up to about 50 yards away and get real time wind come-ups on your phone.

Here in Wyoming this allows me to verify dope and do other work on windy days, while basically "dialing out the wind" as a factor. It really is something once you've used it that way.

BT also allows connection to Ballistic AE (they charge an up charge to do it) and the Kestrel LiNK apps. These are really great apps and allow you to manage and backup your gun profile over the air on the fly. You can also do your firmware update via BT on the apps.

I started with the Sportsmans model. Got it used from a Hide member for $360 and upgraded it to the Elite for another $190. I would seriously look at going the used route. They come up for sale more often now due to the AB Sig 2400 coming on the scene

Save yourself the money, pick up the Geo Ballistics Weather Station (smaller than a Kestrel) and download Ballistic ARC in the Google/Android app store. I couldn't be happier with the setup and I run it every weekend when I go shoot. It's even better that the creator of the product is heavily involved with providing updates and improvements to the shooting community.
