KMW Sentinel Stock

Re: KMW Sentinel Stock

Monkey, that's how I would set up your rifle, including the bubble level. You must be a leftie also. Yeah, very nice!

Just wondering -- how do you land a Sentinel stock? I check Terry's website and there is no way to order one that I found.

Even worse than a KMW stock.....big BLAH..........

Re: KMW Sentinel Stock

Gents,

Terry is, as pointed out, pretty much on his own, so fitting in a significant R&D project and turning out a really well designed and thought out stock in amongst feeding his family is probably a strain now and then. (but the Tom Sellick stand in job probably pays some of it?

)

I think the reasoning behind his building rifles in batches rather than custom it to allow him to do what he does best and enjoys - building rifles.

Super nice guy and great shot to boot

Still enough of my babbling and here's my KMW:

Cannot say how good the bottom metal works, just slick. It 'shoots' too

Desertmonkey,
Is your stock the marble 1/3 O.D., 1/3 Black, and 1/3 light tan?

I just made a mess on my computer... That is one sick ass rig! I got to fondle a rig quite similar to that at a match, and it fit me like a glove.

Re: KMW Sentinel Stock

I hate to ask this but I didn't see it on their site but what does a Sentinal run price wise?
Longsword?

I will probably never be able to buy one but I can dream?

Re: KMW Sentinel Stock

Thank you all for your critique and your nice feedback. Due to some calls and emails regarding this thread, I felt that I should stop by and post.

Ponchair,
I do apologize for the availability thing. I designed the SENTINEL and MACS about 6 years ago along with the dedicated DBM system and let it lay around my office until about 24 months ago. Finally figured that I should see how they fly before I cease breathing. I really put a lot of work and research into the features and dimensions but never, never, ever fooled myself into thinking that either of these stocks would be the perfect stock for everybody. . . No such thing. Too many differences in physical sizes, tastes and even shooting techniques.

Even with great success with the first 100 or so of these to hit the streets on complete rifles, I had no idea that these individual stocks would move out of the shop so fast. I have started to cycle more orders into McMillan to compensate. I do have to handle some of the hardware installs that I can't get McMillan to do yet so that is also a bottle neck for me right now.

At $1,163.50, the pricing is more than I wanted to land at. It does include shipping inside CONUS. We are getting a small cut from McMillan for volume but the dedicated DBM system ended up costing us more than competitive models you may buy. Every feature on my DBM system is made to improve the system but every extra cut and operation makes the assembly more expensive. All edges are chamfered to remove sharp corners and even my mag latch costs about 4 times what it would have if I had went with one of the long finger type latches.

Still, if you price an Adjustable A5 with same features / hardware then add top of the line DBM system from brand X you will land at least $20.00 more than the KMW price and theirs didn't include shipping yet.

I do have more stocks that are in cycle. Hopefully 1st quarter will see more available. I intended to make the stocks available to others from the beginning. My shop is very small and even though I only stick to my niche type work, I knew that if I only sent out these stocks on rifles I completed, the numbers would be very few indeed.

We do have about 270 of these on the street right now and are fortunate to have good feedback from them so far. I continue to refine each group of stocks and McMillan has been great on this project by catering to my whining about tweaks to inlets and playing with lighter and lighter fills.

I will be having more of these stocks available for R700 short and long action (right hand and left hand), Surgeon M591/RSR, Badger M2008 short and long/magnum actions and Surgeon XL-CIP.

Thanks for your interest in these stocks.
I appreciate your inquiry.

Stay safe,
Terry

Re: KMW Sentinel Stock

Onemoretime,

MACS project is coming along nicely. Slowly but nicely. Results so far are excellent. While I would liked to have had it in the streets last year, it will truly be a better product because of the delays.

Here is an image of the early prototype
MACSJan282009055BW.jpg

Live versions will have obvious additions like the LOP spacers installed and our new MUNSTER NV rail. Also trying to finish a different hinge system that will suit my fancy.

Have no idea on cost/pricing until final component costs and install times are determined.

By nature of the contract requirements this stock is being built to compete for, they will have a no bedding system. Specific mounting blocks will be permanently installed based on host weapon.

The first ones are using an integrated mounting block that is working with excellent results. One block works for short action R700/Surgeon type actions. Images of this mounting block were already shown on this site in early 2009.

Also testing blocks for Surgeon XL-CIP and Badger M2008
beddingplate.jpg

The mounting blocks are working so well that I may start to offer them in the SENTINEL stocks as well.

We designed what I think is a kick ass chassis type stock about 4 years ago but decided that I did not want to jump into that exact niche. Seemed like everybody out there was making or designing aluminum frames that took AR15 grips and stocks. While mine didn't do exactly that, it was none the less close to those ideas for my taste so I shelved it.

An alternative and in my opinion a better tool is a stock that is a hybrid between a real rifle stock and all the mission adaptable features of the chassis/aluminum clan. Will the final version of MACS will meet or exceed most of the specifications already out there? We shall see.

Re: KMW Sentinel Stock

Terry I for one am looking forward to trying out one of your new bedding blocks in my sentinel. And I will keep dreaming of one day getting one of your MACS to test out in the field. But until then thanks for all your hard work and the master pieces you build.

Have a Merry Christmas.

This is a nice looking stock, was not aware of it until I saw this thread. To bad about some of the earlier comments...kind of makes you wonder....

Would this style of stock work for a dual purpose tactical/hunting? Since I have started using the 90deg trigger finger technique, I have been looking for a style of stock that would make it easier to grip the stock as well as have the trigger finger in the right spot. This one may do that.

Re: KMW Sentinel Stock

Ratbert,

The MACS project developed a neat rail feature that I am bringing into the SENTINEL stock.

While I am very happy with the dedicated Harris nest on these stocks, there was a need for accomodating bipods with throw-lever attach points.

One thing I hate is pic rails hanging out everywhere like cheese graters. To my knowledge, the MACS is the only stock to nest these hardpoints at surface level. I was not able to get the front 6 O'clock rail totally flush but did get it out of the way by other peoples standards.

Neat thing is that I have an adapter plate for the Harris bipod that can be substituted into that pocket and still take advantage of the low profile Harris vs. forearm design.

Future SENTINEL stocks will come with this feature already installed. I hope to offer retro fits to existing KMW stocks already in the field by Spring/Summer.

I am just now starting to get some type of system in place for individual orders. Until I can get that done, I can only offer them via the web site as they come in and are finish prepped. Sorry. I'm the hold up on that.

DesertMonkey's rifle is a complete KMW build that just happened to come with that stock. We were showing off our Mirage metal finish (basically just a 2 color CeraKote with soft contract transitions)and how the M2008s worked in these stocks. It was meant as a duty rifle but had an additional longer .260 Rem barrel included for competition use when needed.

Stock colors are sequenced differently than posted above.

Re: KMW Sentinel Stock

Mr. Cross,

in reference to actions fitting in the Sentinel stock, The Surgeon RSR and a 700 will fit in the same inlet, right and the Surgeon 591 has it's own inlet? Or can a 700 inlet stock be modified to fit the 591.

Thanks. I check the stock for sale page daily.

Have a great Christmas,

Jack

Re: KMW Sentinel Stock

Terry,

Thank you for taking the time to write back. I was unaware of the amount of stocks that flowed through your doors. I in no way want you to feel that what I said was in a negative manner. I am a typical consumer that sees something and has to have it. I was disappointed to see that you were out of stock and now understand why.

I have only heard great things about you and your product. I hope that maybe somehow in the future that I will own a piece of your work.

Thanks again for posting and I appreciate all the information. I among others cannot wait for the Macs to be available.

Have a Merry Christmas.

-Nathan

Re: KMW Sentinel Stock

No worries at all Nathan.

I didn't take it like that at all. Even if I did, I have to realize that there will always be people out there that do not have all the information available yet.

I'm just happy that you were interested in the product and came to SH to ask around. You'd be surprised how much information gets hashed out here with every aspect of rifles, gear and shooting.

One last thing. Always use the contact resources on any website you visit during your information gathering. The emails and phone numbers are there on most. Some do better than others about answering but it's worth a try usually.

On a seperate note: . . . .
We see tons, yes metric shit tons of threads on this site alone asking technical questions that the makers of the product could answer immediately and with certainty. I would always encourage visitors and members to contact Surgeon, GAP, NightForce, etc. . . . . directly when you have such a question.

Past that, these forums are EXCELLENT for asking opinions and customer satisfaction/feedback questions from other members.

Everybody have a safe and happy Christmas.

Remember to pray for our Country and our brothers and sisters deployed outside it's borders that can't be home during this holiday.

Re: KMW Sentinel Stock

Stefan,

While the "SENTINEL" rifle projects do follow a certain pattern of spec, there will still be a fair amount of variants produced. Rifles built under that name may or may not have: Fluted barrels, NV mounts, Suppressor adapters or threaded muzzles, two tone paint schemes, trigger upgrades, etc.

The plan was and is to produce the rifles in batches of 3-6 rifles with all in the batch having duplicate specs. Next batch would jump to different specs. This helps me offer variety and keeps it fun in the shop.

Variations in the specs listed above can alter the price of the rifle by as much as $800.00. Because of this, I did not set a fixed price for the rifle. Each group will be priced based on what is in that particular build spec.

To answer your question, the "range" of pricing will run from $3,400 - $4,200.00. The higher priced rifles will not shoot any better accuracy wise than the lower priced ones. They will just have more technology growth potential and fancier cosmetics.

When possible, I have also been known to give professional discounts to American citizens that are doing my dirty work overseas while wearing one of our uniforms.

Tell your buddies that everybody here appreciates all of you for the jobs you do.

Stay safe,
Terry
