Before anyone says go the doctor, BTDT and waiting on a call to schedule an MRI and then an ortho referral at VA. So it's gonna take unnecessary time.

Knees were already painful and sound like rice crispies when I flex them. After working in the shop for a few weeks and feeling a little more up to stuff despite one toe that I need yet another surgery on, I went to bed sore after overdoing it one day.

I got up to take out the dog and feed the cat after she started sticking her nose in mine and getting loud because I was late to feed her, and my knee hurt really bad, stopped, then felt strange. Like something under the skin that shouldn't be there. I felt a soft lump and when I pressed on it, it hurt like hell. I'd move it a certain way and it'd go back, I think to the inside side of the L knee. Over the course of a week or so it's gotten worse daily it seems.

If I get out of bed now, that lump almost certainly will appear and it's not going back so easy now. Hurts bad behind it and sometimes in front/inside side. When it hurts out of the blue, it's bad enough to almost knock me down. Otherwise it's just sore and painful to touch in certain areas, especially when that lump moves over.

Here's a picture of that lump in case one of you is an ortho or can tell what's going on by looking at it. When I saw the doctor, the lump wasn't there, it just comes and goes depending on activity. It's soft but painful to the touch and that whole area is more painful when it happens:

I used a thumbnail because it's a rather large image. That lump low and next to the kneecap is the one and isn't supposed to be there.

Luckily I have really nice knee braces with inserts the VA gave me years ago that I never really needed much until now. I have a cheaper one I bought in the army that I use at night. Can't really walk at all without a brace right now.

What the hell is this lump? Is this a torn ligament? Bursitis? Anybody else have this happen? If so, what did you do? Thanks, I appreciate any suggestions.

Could be just as simple as fluid built up could be something a lot worse

Google........." prepatellar bursitis." Of course, Internet diagnosis based on a picture...................................no I'm not a doctor. A friend had it, kind of common and really good prognosis. Good luck!

Thanks guys, I was thinking the same thing but I don't know what a torn ligament feels like or what happens when you tear one. Bursitis would be great as it's about the least problematic and can heal. Definitely don't want surgery. I figured being the knee that at least some of you guys have BTDT with whatever I'm dealing with now.

Got an MRI schedule finally, but it's exactly one month --just a day short of me being able to outsource it and get it done faster. Was hoping I can get the doctor to refer me to ortho and I can schedule the appt. a week after the MRI just to speed things up. We'll see. New guy, wants to do shit by the book, doesn't understand VA and it's possible he has no concept of how time works, but he's new so not sure.

If anyone else sees this and says "I had that!" please let me know how you addressed it, how long it took, etc. Every little bit helps.

Right now the braces seem to be helping some, which would indicate either bursitis or ligaments I'd imagine, but not sure and they aren't 100% either.

I owe Strykervet an apology. When I first posted my comment I thought I was doing so in the spirit of the hide. Just kidding around. I began to think about it however and I realized this guy's been through a lot and he really doesn't need my smartass comments.

Stryker I do hope this problem gets resolved quickly and without too much pain.

Probably inflammation of the area due to torn or worn cart with Fluid build up. (Bursitis)

Rest, elevation and probably an x-ray would help. For the pain.. go to Wal-Mart and get Lidocaine 4% patches, apply at night or during the day. Inflammation with NSAIDs if you can tolerate.

Fluid will have to be drained if it doesn't go away.

The lump could be a patella tendon that displaced the KneeCap? I don't know.. just shooting what it could be.

The only thing I know, those Lidocaine Patches are a God Send..... they help!

Oh, I thought I posted back here. So I finally get to a doctor and he pulls 30ml fluid off my knee and injects it with cortisone. This was just last week! It took THAT damn long. He looked at the xrays and found 3 floating bone fragments, so that's what has been locking it up. He told them they HAVE to send me to ortho for removal of the fragments and also this procedure where they scrape the tissue and prompt healing.

The swelling has gone down and it doesn't hurt as bad but it still hurts and it still feels weird and "ball" keeps popping out, which I think may be a fragment.

Got foot surgery coming up so the knee I guess will go on the back burner or maybe I can at least get the process started.

I have two knee braces coming that are supposed to be better than the ones I have, but nothing like that has been helping to actually fix whatever went so horribly wrong with it several months ago.
