I'm not familiar with the case. Did the u.s. marshals identify themselves as Marshals? Why of course I've never been on any one of their work details the times I have seen them they're all wearing US Marshal identifiable gear, and clearly State who they are.
Assuming that is what happened then whoever pulled any weapon on a u.s. marshal deserves to get shot.

From what video you can find on it it appeared to be unprovoked after the rally when people were leaving the area.
And again I would feel bad if the marshals gunned him down but that isn’t what happened either. Again go look at the reports around that event. They attempted to arrest him and there was an altercation that resulted in his death. Also there were several days when it was well known who the suspect was and he could have turned himself in but didn’t unlike Kyle who tried right after his altercation and then did turn himself in the next day. Let’s not pretend that the guy in Portland and Kyle are similar because they are not. If you want support in these ideas then let’s compare apples to apples.
