Fieldcraft Land Nav and Compass reading book?

Re: Land Nav and Compass reading book?

best book i have seen that covers everything from GPS to UTM grids, to celestial navagation is called WILDERNESS NAVAGATION by Fred Touche , get the latest edition , ebay or amazon etc.,

another great source if you are going to be using UTM grid quad maps (USGS type topo maps) is www.maptools.com

these two sources will keep you busy for a while

Re: Land Nav and Compass reading book?

For a commercial offering that is a bit easier to read but still covers most everything, try this one. Be Expert with Map & Compass. The original Orienteering Handbook. By Bjorn Kjellstrom.

Most hiking stores in our area carry it. If all else fails try Amazon.com

Good luck.

Re: Land Nav and Compass reading book?

FWIW, i purchased "wilderness Navigation"
and "be an expert witha map and compass" as suggested around here to see if there are any tips or tricks ect that can come in useful. i just finished wildnerness navigation and i have to say, if you have a basic understanding of land nav, from a military standpoint, even for a lower enlisted's capability, that one is useless. If you have NO experience, then yes, it can teach you the basics in an easy to read format/writing style.

as for "be an expert..", I have not yet opened that one, but ill be starting it soon

Re: Land Nav and Compass reading book?

Sounds like you may be presently enlisted? If so, the NCO MCI 7000 course has a great land nav section in Battle Skills, comes with a protractor ( though that was a few years ago). The Army Field manual mentioned by another poster is good also, if I remember right it even had a section on the artillery compass. Practice and study for understanding will make you very competent with a compass. Get yourself a pace counter bead string, beats fingers.
