Im looking for a sharpening kit to use on my hunting knives, pocket knives, butchering knives, and maybe my straight razor. Do any of you have experience with the Lansky set? Should I just go with a single wet stone instead? Ive never used a knife sharpener before.

Re: Lansky Sharpener

I have used and really do like the lansky, especially when doing knives that have different angles on each side. That being said I just use a diamond stone with coarse on one side fine on the other. The lansky may be easier for you to use since the angles are all set for you.

Re: Lansky Sharpener

It's pretty simple with a lansky, just set up the stone then stick it through each slot and look at how it lays on the blade. It should be pretty clear which one is right.

Re: Lansky Sharpener

Which Lansky we talking? I'm pretty sure Santa is bringing me a Lansky Four-Rod Turn Box Crock Stick Sharpener and I'm excited to try it out.

I SUCK at sharpening and this is supposed to produce a good (but not great) edge even in the hands of a sharpening-challenged individual such as myself.

-Deadly.

Re: Lansky Sharpener

I am assuming deadly that the OP was talking about the kits with several stones, rods, and the clamp with several angles on it. They really do work great and it is simple to put a nice edge on a blade, practically does it for you.

Re: Lansky Sharpener

I ordered a Lansky deluxe diamond kit a few years back. I never could get a knife sharp with that thing. I almost ruined a good Benchmade with it. I couldn't use it, my dad couldn't use it and a friend from work has got it now and he can't use it either. The problem is the clamp. I personally like a 15-20 degree per side. With the lansky I always hit the clamp and not the knife. I recommend the Spyderco sharpmaker.

Re: Lansky Sharpener

Varminter, did you just put the edge of the clamp on the blade? I have used one of the small angles before with no problems. Also I tend to use short strokes and work my way slowly down the blade instead of one long stroke at a time down the entire length. For me this works much better when I have used them.

Re: Lansky Sharpener

I got as close to the spine of the knife as I could. I tried the short stroke method and making one long stroke. I know there are many positive reviews on the Lansky and people on Youtube like it. All I did was almost ruin knives. I even ordered the stand for more stability but it didn't help. I need something that is very easy to use when I sharpen knives because I am not that good at it. I didn't want to be one of the people who recommends something the original poster didn't ask about but I really do think the sharpmaker is the way to go.

Re: Lansky Sharpener

I have used a Lansky and a "Work Sharp" electric sharpener for a few years. The Lansky system works well but it takes a significant amount of time for each knife. I can sharpen a knife with the Work Sharp in a couple minutes and shave with it.

Both have a learning curve and it is best to experiment with them to learn what you are doing. I have had some trouble getting the knife blade tip shaving sharp with the Work Sharp but I have been reading and I may know what I was doing wrong.

Good Luck with your decision

Re: Lansky Sharpener

I guess to each his own, maybe it is not as easy for some. To the OP you could always go down to academy and pick one up, if you don't like it, take it back and tell them it doesn't work =). Then try somethin else.

Re: Lansky Sharpener

I have the basic lansky with course, medium, and fine stone. My main complaint is having to use the oil with the traditional stone. Had I known that it wasn't necessary with the diamond stones, I would have spent the extra to get them.

When I first got it I did not know anything about hand sharpening a knife. I tried several times on different knives and had poor results. I wanted to upgrade and get a wicked edge. Huge price jump! While watching the wicked edge promo video I discovered my problem. I had been trying to sharpen my blades at too accuse of angles and wasn't even touching the working edge. Once I figured out to look and make sure I was getting scratches in the edge finish all the way to the edge, I have been able to get any knife I put in the clamp extremely sharp.

I think it is a good simple system for a beginner sharpener. I also think there are better out there, but at the cost of a lot more money. I still haven't been able to justify the wicked edge yet, and I can get them at a discount.

+1 on the Worksharp http://www.worksharptools.com/sportsmans...v.tabs.tpl.html). Easy to use, can use on many tools, works for both kitchen/hunting knives, and it works!
