I just got a lee reloading kit from my lovely wife for xmas and it has the hand primer tool in it but my 300 rum wont fit the case is barley to wide is it ok to grind away enough to make it fit if not what is a cheap alternative?

Re: lee hand primer?

Go ahead and trim the tool so brass will slide in. I had to do that with the WSM cases. Also don't forget to keep the pivot points lubed on the priming tool.

Re: lee hand primer?

I have one of those for priming 308/30.06 and it lasted maybe 200 rounds. Match cases have tight pockets and the force required to seat the primers was more than the shell holder could hold and the lips of the shell holder just gave way and I could no longer hold cases. Note Match cases have no crimp thusly there was no impediment to seating them. All cases seat fine on three RCBS primer seaters (cam and automatic) plus the ones on the loading tools.
This is the only piece of Lee stuff that has ever failed me.

Re: lee hand primer?

I'm on my 2nd after blowing up my first 15 years ago. I have made the modification to the support lip on mine to accommodate WSM cases and have suffered no ill effects. Grind away to fit.

Cheers,

Doc

Re: lee hand primer?

I've done it to accomodate the 7 SAUM that I ahve (same parent case, the 404 Jeffeys)

You need to dremel out about 25 thou IIRC from the shoulder of the priming tool and it will work fine.

My suggestion is that you meausure the base of the fired rounds (should be around .530) and cut a little piece of paper that diameter plus 10 thousandths (say .540 for argument sake)

glue that piece of paper to the top of the priming tool and color it with a perm. marker (or smurf piss)

Remove the paper, dremel it clear and you're set to go.

Re: lee hand primer?

i got the same kit a couple years ago. after breaking the lee hand primer a few times and stoping me in my tracks i bought a rcbs hand primer and its the best 30 bucks i ever spent. i ended up buying another one. one for srp and one for lrp

Re: lee hand primer?

I have 2 of the Lee hand priming tools and haven't had any problems. I have 1 set up for small rifle primers and the other set up for the large rifle primers. Saves a little time. Just my 0.02

Re: lee hand primer?

For what the lee cost its worth it to me. The only issue with my first one was the lever snapped in half. Thirteen dollars and 2days later from Midway and I was back in business.
