Lets say you have a 5", 7", and 9" model suppressor, much like what TBAC is currently offering.

The noise difference will be obvious, but my question is purely in regards to recoil reduction and secondly muzzle blast in close quarters, for example: the culvert shot at SH Cup.

Where do you start to hit a point of diminishing returns with recoil reduction? 3"? 6"? My thought is if I must wear ear protection anyways, maybe I'm willing to give up a few dB for a more compact rifle if it still shoots as well. Does anyone have some first hand experience shooting the same model suppressor in different lengths back to back? I shot the 5" and 7" TBAC at demo days back to back, but they were mounted on a 300 BLK shooting subs so both felt the same. I'm wondering if this would translate to my 6.5 Creedmoor.

I wasn't expecting a reply so quickly, thanks Zak. It sounds like the 7" is really what I'm after. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. Your certificates at the Cup were some of the first things to go. I wish I could have snagged one of the free ones but I'm not going to complain about 50% off either! Thanks for supporting the sport!

My current brake attach set-up has minimal POI shift and is capable of the same accuracy with/without suppressor, and even has a good bit less recoil with just the brake, but I shoot it better suppressed. It's a mental thing and its the same reason that people tend to shoot .22 LR so well compared to large calibers, but I know what you mean. I would probably regret getting the 5" over the 7".

Not to change the topic and I think this might apply slightly.

Have you researched building a suppressor with a built in "brake" design?
Such as my Silencer Tech suppressor which is 7" and has ports all the way around at the very end of the can.

My terminology may be off here.

I cant tell much difference between my cans. The only two of fairly large size difference I have available to me to directly compare since they both use the same TOMB mount. Griffin Armament Recce 7 and PHS338. Theres little if any difference in recoil, both have slightly more recoil than the brake alone but the main difference is in sound. I mainly use the Recce 7 on my smaller than 308 calibers since the PHS338 is quite a bit more quiet.

The 5" catches less gas from a .308-class cartridge (that's why it's so much louder), but I can't give you a #.
I am interested in the difference between the TBAC 7" and 9" as well. Leaning towards a 7" if the sound difference is not much.
Will the shorter can be as effective in sound reduction as the 9"?
Thanks

So here are some numbers for you;
Recoil comparison using sled, M80, .308, ball ammo. Travel is in inches.

Bare Muzzle: avg: 32.9" STDEV: 0.83
30P-1: avg 18" stdev: 0 (45.3% reduction)
CB7: avg: 18.5" stdev: 0.36 (43.9 % red)
CB5: avg: 21.45" stdev 0.19 (34.8% red)
338BA/CB: avg: 17.7" stdev 0.52 (46.3% red)

What in the HECK is this? Solid scientific testing? Don't you know you are supposed to speculate and guesstimate? This is the internet!

I REALLY appreciate the data. It looks like the jump from the standard length to the 5 is significant and the 7" is a pretty good trade off all around.

my 30PS is very much my favorite suppressor. I've used a 30P-1, a 30PS, and others by other manufacturers.
