In the case of an unexpected emergency, one should have AT THE VERY LEAST, a plan.
A practiced procedure would be better.
    A prepared bug-out-bag would be better'er.
And a viable and updated communications method and contact tree worked out.

Just over 4 days ago, there have been many MANY forest fires started in the Province of British Columbia. The vast majority of them due to lightning strikes.

There are well over 200 separate fires burning in the Province, and a State Of Emergency has been called as of Sunday (previous).

There is one particularly bad fire, in the 100 Mile House area, which is over 1,200 hectares. The town and vicinity has been evacuated. This evacuation started on Saturday (previous).

The point of all this is, I am sitting here in Winnipeg, Mb, which is really really far away. I'm continuing to remain patient, and With Faith that all is well, and will be well.

Many who went South for evacuation were turned around, and directed North, due to other evacuees filling up facilities from other fires further South.

My father, a luddite/hermit/lone wolf/closet-prepper, also has a motor-home and stores to last in the bush for at least 3 weeks. With no communication gear. "I'll be perfectly fine and comfortable whilst the world burns itself down and civilization goes to shit" has been a quote/motto of his for decades.

And I haven't heard from him in 4 days now. This is what it looks like when one goes nutso, and remains calm with Faith, at the same time.

So please, people, be responsible, eh? Learn from others mistakes.

Tell him to take up Ham radio, then he can communicate all around the world with his own gear and nobody else's infrastructure needed.
    That way he can
    a. let you know he is good
    b. enjoy listening to tales of the rest of the world going down the tubes.

X54, you're on to something, there.

Except he's had a mobile HAM radio for almost 30 years. He refuses to even think of getting a license though, for fear of 'the man' tracking him. But when he's out in the bush, he'll turn it on, and just 'listen'. Most times the mic isn't even plugged in, except for it's remote 'volume control' and whatnot.

One might think that certain people could generally call/contact/make an effort to let other insignificant individuals know that they're alright though. And maybe even divulge their locale, just for posterity's sake.

I can't remember the name of the movie, but my dad is "Shades of Malkovich". You know, the one where his front door is the hood of a wreck?

I wouldn't worry too much about the "man" tracking him, for your license you just have to give a valid mailing address that you can receive mail at in a timely manner, so pretty much anywhere.
As far as tracking his transmissions go, unless he is doing something to make a big ass of himself, nobody is going to spend the time and effort to triangulate his position, and if he is making shorter transmissions from the middle of nowhere it's a lot harder.

If he is concerned about tracking, just get into long distance stuff, he can just send the signal around the world the long way or moon bounce it, or pick a take off angle that provides a first skip distance he wants etc.
Most people try hard to get somebody to pick them up or find someone new to pick up, if you don't want to be found, and are talking quickly to someone who knows when, and at what settings / frequencies to use, nobody is going to be finding you unless you are a really high value target, (in which case a drone can probably just track down the signal from the spark plugs if you have a gasoline engine car or generator).

The people who get tracked down & busted are just about always borderline criminal anti-social types who purposely start harassing & interfering with others & breaking all the rules, harassing police and military and basically begging to have somebody put the boot to them. Then people get bothered enough to go start hunting them down, usually in more urban settings when the buggers are using shorter distance bands that are more popular.

Sean, one thing to remember, His choice. My Dad was a hard headed, my way or the highway guy all his life. All 95 1/2 years. Made me pull my hair at times ( paybacks? ) but I did finally realize that he made his own choices. Not my place to even try and deny him that. Yeah You gotta worry but still his choices. Best, S.

    True that.

I learned in Navy comm school ages ago that it's hard as fuck to triangulate someone who doesn't want to be found and knows what he's doing.

W54, I hear you, and totally agree with you. I do have my license, and am trying to amass the equipment for a base station. I've gotten a tower, so far. :D Also trying to get a VHF and DMS system for the boat. Or is that DSM? I forget.

Cav, you're right, and I do get that. That was kinda the point of this thread. The main point of the thread. I'm not out to deny him anything at all. I was ONLY pointing out that no matter what his/ya'lls mindset is regarding freedom/evacuate/escape/holiday.... do kinda keep in contact with your own offspring, to let them know ya'lls ok/safe/comfortable. That kind of thing.

Thing is, I know his 'hiding ground' which is also his hunting and fishing ground. When I used to live in B.C., I too was there many times, and if I were able to build a home there, I would do so in a quick second. Problem with this whole scenario is, his home and hometown have gone through a forest fire. So we don't know if his home still stands.

And the other problem is, his 'hiding ground' is also in another major fire area, to which folks are kept out, and for me to say it's remote would be an understatement. So you see why I'm concerned. When all it would take is a call/contact/reach-out.

Parents.... there aoughta be a law....
    Haaaaaaaa

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you aren't trying to control or manipulate the "Ol'Man". Just a reminder that we are all responsible for our own actions / choices even "Pops". Mother nature can be and is an unforgiving bitch especially with fire. He'll be in my prayers. S.

Old men like your dad didn’t get to be old b/c they don’t know what they are doing...... he’ll be fine. Probably even take care of a couple of others while he is out there too. Sorry you are going through it on the other side.
