Rifle Scopes Leupold drop on 1/21

I’d guess real world use is hold left edge or right edge of target at 100y and the MIL reticle wind holds help the further out you go.

I like it but if it’s only available in illumination that’s kinda a deal breaker for me cause I’m cheap

The reticle looks like a significant upgrade over the TMR for sure. It gives some FC-DMX vibes but also made some odd choices.

Since they provide zero mil hashes from the donut to 2 mils, dialing and holding for mild to moderate wind becomes a pretty tough task since you’re holding in blank space

Also, if you’re not dialing but need to hold for wind at all at 3/5/7/9 mils, good luck.

Lastly, I know a valid critique of the H6Xi reticle is that the numbers on the tree are small and hard to read. I suspect the numbers on the sides of the CMR tree are just as small as Steiners STR-MIL tree too

What features of this reticle make it an upgrade to the TMR in your eyes?

Personally I prefer the tree, more distinct aiming point for low mag usage (2-3x) and numbering for the mils. I used the TMR for a few years and could get lost or spent too much time trying to determine, am I holding on 3 mils, 3.5 mils? Etc

Not bad. A lot of gap around the donut, but I think I’ll give it a shot. I still don’t know how it took 2 years to come out with a reticle like this, but I’ll give it a shot.

Edit: seems like it will work well at 2x. I like the thick crosshairs and how they taper. Overall it has a lot of Athlon AHMR2 vibes and that’s a good thing.

But man is this optic expensive. MSRP $2,600-$2,700 Even with a sizeable military discount, it’s still pricey. Does it really deserve to cost about the same as a March 1-10/1.5-15 dual focal plane?

Well, they tried. They didn't fully understand usable at bottom and top, but for Leupold they got closer than I thought they would. Question is, how long will it take them to actually offer this reticle…

They were all illuminated before.
It looks like the only things that's really changed is the name.
Man, their marketing department completely dropped the ball. I’m trying to find out what is actually different about the Gen 2 and it’s just all hand waving.

Their Instagram says “The new VX-6HD Gen 2 riflescope aims higher with unmatched clarity, control, and durability. Discover the latest in elite hunting scopes at Leupold.com.”

I go to their website and it just talks about dominance. Sure, the Gen 2 page shows features, but I have no idea what’s new or not. They have provided absolutely no “why” for excitement.

More hand waving:

“For hunters who lead, who push further, and who demand more from their gear—there’s the VX-6HD Gen 2 riflescope. It’s built to meet the demands of today’s alpha hunters, turning obstacles into opportunities. Whether it’s rugged terrain, low-light conditions, or unpredictable weather, this scope gives you the edge to dominate every challenge.

This isn’t just another scope. It’s your advantage in the field, ensuring confidence in every shot, no matter where the hunt takes you.

THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE ALPHA

Every hunt comes with its own set of challenges—dense timber that demands quick decisions, harsh sunlight obscuring your view, or long-distance targets that test your precision. The VX-6HD Gen 2 was born for these moments, designed to give you total control no matter the environment. “

Edit: watching their promo video also gives me jack nothing.

The only real change I can see is the toolless turrets, the everything else sounds like it’s the same, maybe the coatings changed?
All the reticle options are the same, and the old VX6hd had an integrated throw lever.

Some real nice hyperbole and animations though.

Gotta love marketing, this apparently is the best scope on the planet for clarity, control and durability... better than all the Swarovski's, better than Zeiss, better than Nightforce, even better than ZCO and Tangent Theta. Maybe they should clarify what they mean by "unmatched"... unmatched within their own product line (I assume this is what they mean) because it is safe to assume the aforementioned scope manufacturers would have something to say about Leupold's claims ;)

I am sure they are still catering to all the world's hunters. We are a small percentage of users.
That is absolutely correct, this is where Leupold made its name. Their understanding of the crossover market is somewhat lacking, but I feel they are slowly learning, I just wish they would be leading - they certainly have the potential. But quite a few companies squander their potential 🤷‍♂️

Larger objective means larger exit pupil for potentially better low light ability, larger objective sometimes means more forgiving eyebox but other factors impact this as well.
Would you then apply the same logic to the MK4 18x Vs the MK5 18x? And what would be your opinion of a direct comparison of those 2 scopes? I am just trying to wrap my head around it, looking for a AR15 suitable scope for 2nd Shooter adventure Matches.

Same logic can be applied to most any scope all things being equal; however, all things are often not equal so use this as a "general" rule. I would venture to guess that the Mark 4 4.5-18x52 draws in a wee bit more light than the Mark 5 3.6-18x44, but you would likely need to have them side by side to know for certain, also the longer design with 4x erector of the Mark 4 likely makes it a bit more forgiving than the Mark 5.

The quick release change turret is sweet and would like to see other manufacturers follow
Tangent Theta has been offering toolless turrets for quite some time, Element also has a toolless design. I do like Leupold's flip up lever idea making it very fast to change zero. If they made their VX6-HD G2 2-12x42 in FFP and with the new CMR-MIL reticle from the Mark 5 this would be ideal, but as is the case for most of these manufacturers they don't understand that; they think 2-12 scopes and the like are hunting scopes and have little concept of the MPVO need for AR platform and crossover (hunters who also like to shoot steel and prefer FFP but in lighter scope bodies with a reticle that works at lower magnifications as well as higher) shooting. Some are starting to "get it" but it is taking a long time for the industry to recognize the gap in the marketplace and capitalize on it.
