Need help I’m planning on building a rem 700 6.5 cm on a carbon chassis for hunting the back country. I want to use a proof research barrel but I don’t know what would be the best length for the round. I’m also using a usoptics tpal 1.8-10x37 which weights 30oz trying to stay light thanks.

From what I’ve read on the 6.5 cm 22” at a 1:8 twist doesn’t loose to much velocity over a 26”.

That’s really up to you. From my experience and not what the internet told me, you will lose roughly 25 FPS per inch coming down from a 26” to a 20”. That is coming from several rifles with different barrel lengths and several different ammunition loading. Longer or shorter than that I have no experience. I see the exact same drop off with my .308 rifles.

A little speed one way or another makes very little difference out to any reasonable hunting range.

Get a 12oz optic, drop to 18" barrel.

When you can cut over a pound out of the optic, it seems silly to worry about barrel length.

actually I wasn’t worry about barrel length do to weight. The performance is what I was concern with plus there’s not one single ffp scope that weights 12oz . And that’s what I like to hunt with .

You can probably buy a Barrett Fieldcraft for less and get more.

What is your target weight?
Using a suppressor?
If so, for 6.5 Creed I’d roll with a Christensen Arms Ridgeline 20” or the Barrett Fieldcraft 18”. Both are threaded 5/8x24.

I already have a 22in bertlein #3 6.5 cm on a carbon fiber traditional stock . The rifle was built by C&h precision I don’t recommend them they lead time just happen to be shorter at the time . It shoots ok but I wanted to try another research proof barrel . I have a 26in proof research 300wm built by GAP that is so much fun to shoot. I appreciate everyone for their input .

By the way the target weight is 7lb with optic . Not suppress !!!

You may need to go titanium receiver and carbon barrel to do that with a scope that weighs almost 2 lbs.

2 manners ultimate classic with M5 bottom metal (could save here)
2 action (fuzion ti saves 5 oz over bighorn origin)
3 barrel (lighter saves up to 10oz)
2.2 scope and rings (razor hd lh saves 1 pound)


9.2 pounds (7.2 with fuzion lighter/shorter barrel, new scope, could squeek under 7 with different bottom metal)

but you're also talking about $900 more to save the 5oz with action and again with new scope

Yes. The Barrett for example, 5.2 lbs starting, goes to about 6 with a nice light 2-10 optic, bipod and sling bring it up to 6.8.

He's going to need to drop a pound somewhere to compensate for the tank of a scope. Christensen can get you down around 4, but you're into a $5k+ rifle by that time.

Are you married to that 2lb scope? Reason I ask is you can spend silly money going after a couple oz on the rifle when a Leupold VX3 LRP (it’s ffp) will drop 10oz off your glass weight. You could easily spend over a grand and lose a good chunk of velocity trying to cut that much weight from an already ultralight rifle. Leupold isn’t perfect but they can be your best friend when building a hunting rig for the mountains.

It’s ok I received a 20oz a NF nxs scope today in the mail today that should get me closer to the weight Ti receiver and fluted bolt should be ok.??
