I think I'm on to a good load. Loading one more test round, and headed back out.

Right now, 43.3gr of H4350 with hBN coated 139 scenars gave me this 5 shot group

Still have round primers and no real pressure signs here. I'm going to ladder up from these and see if I can nail down the sweet spot, and also see how fast I can get them before over pressure.

(Load 3) per Quick Load should have generated a MV of 2828 FPS. But the MV was chronographed at 2729 FPS, 2719 FPS, 2751 FPS. The load was 140 VLD, 46.5-H4831SC, 243 Lapua Brass turned and sized, CCIBR, 2.940" COAL This 3 shot group measured 0.80" outside.

(Load 4) per Quick Load should have generated a MV of 3203 FPS and the MV was chronographed at 3148 FPS, - 3208 FPS. The load was 100 Nosler Balistic Tip, 42.5-IMR 4064, 243 Lapua Brass turned and sized, CCIBR, 2.850" COAL This 3 shot group measured 0.90" outside.

Mr. Roscoe builds very accurate rifles and is a good guy to work with. </div></div>

How far off the lands are you? Whats the twist on you barrel and how many grooves does it have?

*no pressure signs at all, but the dtacs do exhibit slight barrel jump compared to the 105 load.

Don't know how far I am from the lands seeing as I don't have a comparator or a modified case for the OAL gauge yet, but I'm pretty close.

Velocities are running just a tick over 2900fps, and grouping great. .3150" group at 100y and a 1.25" group at 300y. After that I put it on steel all the way to 1k and it followed the FTE data within a tenth.

This load hammers and makes a very attractive caliber at this load. If it wasn't for my vastly superior 243 (sarcasm here) this would be on my build list. Of course I have a 6.5x284 which is the Creedmor's bigger and kick-ass older brother and we're going to see what the RL 17 can do in it.

All fps avg taken on at least 5 shots, if string was incomplete due to chrony issue, overcast, etc, string was retested.

***Also tested with another 8 twist Bartlien and results were very consistant 30fps faster than what is shown below. This barrel only has 200 rounds through it.

The last load listed at 44gr using 115gr DTAC's was the only load that showed any sign of pressure. First round on string was slight tight bolt, and 2 out of the 5 rounds had slight ejector swipe.

Both of the loads below were tested for accuracy at 300 and 600 yards. Very very impressive results on steel.

Returning to this thread, my shooting environment has changed. I am not shooting 1000yd anymore, as the only venue within reasonable travel distance for me, (I stay pretty close to home) has closed its doors to Highpower and F Class shooting.

These days I shoot FV200, which uses a V style target with a 1/2MOA V ring and a 1MOA 5 ring, 2MOA 4 ring, etc., at 200yd, otherwise, pretty much F Class rules.

I have redeveloped my load, to use the 95gr HDY V-Max at around a minimum load in the same 28" 1:8" barrel. I'm using Ramshot, because I have an otherwise unused stock of it, and went with Hunter rather than Big Game, which would have been a more approporiate burn rate, to get a higher load density percentage.

My strategy is to use a smaller bullet, lighter charge, minimum pressures and temps, to extend bore/throat life, and to avoid blowing up bullets due to centrifugal force. What I found out was that the HDY 95gr V-Max is a tough bullet; handling max charges in the long, fast twist just fine.

But it also works well near min, and I'm using 46.0gr of R/S Hunter, and getting 1MOA or better with F Class technique at 200yd.

With Big Game, a comparable load would be somewhere around 41-42gr, and I simply did not like how low the load density pecentage was getting, somewhere down around 80%, with such loads.

I can only guess at velocities for now, but I'm guessing somewhere between 3000-3200fps.

I can hit 2975fps and have good groups low ES/SD

or go mad n run 3000fps plus, but milder load has way better numbers and shoots much tighter

Heres what I came up with in my new rifle. I'm definitely looking for some input on these.

Started at 36.0gn but took all ten to get on paper
Finally got the chronny set up at shot #26 which was 36.4gn

I was getting slightly stiff bolt lift and ejector wipe at 36.4 All cases above 36.2 showed at least slight ejector marks. I'm going to download to 36.2 for now and shoot some more groups.

Unrelated question:
I can get IMR4350 here but not H4350, should I use the H4350 load with IMR or will it cause a noticeable difference? I've got 1lb of RL15 to try as well, it seems to be the most available powder here. I live on Kodiak Island AK so everyone gets their powder from the same shop, hence quite limited supply and its not worth it to order since it has to be barged in at considerable cost.

I will answer my own question. a 6.5x284 rifle w/ a 30" bbl is geting 3084 FPS with this load:

49.4 grains RL-17,140 Berger VLD moly, GM215M primer, Lapua brass, OAL of 3.090.

So, I wonder what a 6.5CM could get with a 26-28" bbl and RL-17??? Sine JRose is using a 25" bbl. I have a 26" bbl 6.5CM on the way, but dont re-load as of now. I guess bbl life would be the only issue with this load....

Here is a new load worked up. It is shooting 2 moa flatter than my last load. I shot at 800 yards and my usual come up was 18.8. With this load I was at 16.5. Here is the data.

One is a 30" broughton tight bore barrel. I shot my other 26" with only a 1/2 moa moa difference between the two. I did not chrono the 26" today because of the wind. Base off the difference on come ups. It will be close. I post the results with a 24", 26" with the chrono. Snowing and cloudy today. The 30" was chrono 2 days ago in a clear day.

24" 20.4 at 2797fps 139 lapuas Now shooting JLK 130s 18.25
26" 18.8 at 2840 fps 139 lapuas Now shooting Jlk 130s 16.5
30" ended up with the JLK 130s 16 moa

The 30" barrel I have always had a hard time getting speed out of the loads because of the bore tight. It would always run into pressure signs.

42.5 gr had acceptable web expansion (.001) but the primer pockets were slightly enlarged. At 42gr they stay tight.

I just got a bunch of JLK 130's and did a similar test but underestimated what my max would be and only went to 43.5 gr. From the looks of it i should end up right where dar is for charge weight and similar velocity.

43.5 RL17 gave 2880fps. Much flatter than the 139 Lapua's. I wasn't sure how they would like the jump but accuracy is great, and about .7 MIL flatter to 970 yards than the 139(the furthest I shot them to that day). I think max will come a little over 44 gr and 2925 fps. I'll update when I try again soon.

For referance, my go to H4350 load is 40.7 gr and 2775 fps. Any more and primer pockets suffer.

Ya they hammer! They don't give up any accuracy to the 139/H4350 load I have been firing for 3k rounds. If your worried about the accuracy in mag fit trim, try it, you may be surprised. While I can probably go faster than the 2880 i got, i may stay there since it out shoots the 139's for drop/drift by a good margin and is much nicer to the brass than the other load ever was.

edited: someone here mentioned the JLK's needing the standard VLD treatment of jam, OR they can be jumped long with good results.

I need some help with the starting loads for my 260. I have a few different bullets thus far. I started playing with the 140gr Amax first.

I used the Hornady OAL tool and the bullet starting sticking at 2.881. I loaded a bullet in a case at 2.880 and it did not stick in the chamber. I thought about backing off .020 off the OAL tool reading.

I figured I would start with a OAL of 2.880 and 41.5 gr of H4350 and go up by .2-.3 grain from there and look for pressure signs. Based on some of the other weight charges in this thread it seemed 41.5 would be a safe starting load.

All of my manuals have significantly shorter OAL and show IMR4350 instead of H4350.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. This is being used in a Badger M2008 action with a 26" 1:8.5 twist barrel cut with a .100 freebore reamer.

Good things are being said about 4831sc, and my 139 scenars in the Creedmoor like it.

Start around 46.0 gr and work up, I'm seated about 15 thou off the lands. I have a 4130 load I can dig up later, but it's using a hBN coated bullet...

This is a very mild load that gives me .45 MOA 10 shot groups. I have shot it out to 1000 yards with great results. I will sacrifice a little velocity for increased barrel life.
