Hey, I am looking to find some fellow shooters in OR. I got stuck with recruiting duty in Oregon City, so I would like to find a good spot to go and shoot some distance. I've done a bit of driving around on the mountain roads around here, but there are too many trees everywhere I've looked. Even the clear cuts are covered with 6 feet of brush. I don't mind driving to the east side, I would just like there to be somewhere I am driving to if I am going to go that far. I've looked into the shooting clubs around here, but none of the long range days seem to mesh with my days off. Any ideas? Anybody know any of the farmers around here? Where do you guys go blast?

Re: Long range in OR

I live in Oregon for 1/2 of each month. I think you need to go to the coast, trask is the name of the area along highway22 I think it is. I elk hunt there sometimes and have seen some good spots. It has been a few years though so I am not sure. I was going to take a look next time I was home. I was going to try and ask a guy named Jim Jacobe, he is a firearms instructor in Salem I have heard he has a key to the Warehouser tree farms gates. He has a website, jimjacobe.com. If I hear something I will give you a shout.

Thanks,

Zack

Esdacada / douglas ridge club shoots on (i think) Thursdays LR out to 1-k.
sherwood / tri-counties shoots 600 on Tuesday nights .
i got some mult-steel on blm but it is up @ least 2-K ASL and gets shity up there this time of year . I am not hungry enough yet but If you are Hungry and have aggressive tires with 4x4 you might get up there .

There are some spots you can open up on in the Trask area but it's going to take some careful driving this time of year and some time exploring to find some.

Read the laws you can't shoot towards a road within a reasonable distance, and you can't shoot across a road so the trick to finding a place to setup on is going to revolve around that I believe the logging roads definitely count.

Your best bet is to find an open section where the logging roads don't cross for a good deal and coincide with a clearcut. I've seen them, but don't have the positions marked on a map or anything I just drag out there in the summer sometimes.

I know there must be some good options if you head east, but a lot of that's reservation land so I'm not all to sure where to go.

I've run into the same problems though it's hard to find stretches of BLM open enough to really get down.

Looking forward to checking out Softcock's BLM area once the weather clears up a little though.

Re: Long range in OR

Last time I was out east of Scott's Mills, and there looked like there was some good potential. I think that I will head out there tomorrow, and see what I can find.. If there is something awesome I'll put it up here.

Re: Long range in OR

Tri-County gun club's practical rifle group will be having a precision rifle match (some people mistakenly call it a "sniper" match, but that is another thread) on Saturday 12 February 2011. Tri-county's longest range is a 600 yard known distance range. The gravel pit where most of the practical rifle shooting is done can go out to 490-500 yards depending on what the company quarrying rock left the pit like when they were last working on it.

The group puts on a pretty decent match for an entry fee of $20 or less. They will use unusual props, sometimes have the shooter on top of the rim of the quarry shooting at a downward angle. Often there is a stage where you have to find your targets and engage them, other times they give you the distance, and a compass heading.

The match is always a surprise, so no one gets to practice the stages. Laser range finders, binoculars, and any other gear is allowed. Most powerful cartridge limit is 30-06/8mm Mauser.

No bullets that are attracted to a magnet are allowed.

Elbow and knee pads aren't required, but are recommended. Eye and ear protection is required for everyone...even spectators.

I'm not a match director, or even a range officer, I'm just trying to get the word out in case someone wants to shoot the match. Feel free to PM or email me if you would like more info.

Match signup starts about 08:30, shooting usually starts after the safety briefing that begins at 09:30 and is mandatory. Tri-county has a web site that shows directions, club calendar, and lots of other information.
