Looking for a 223

Hello,

I'm looking for a .223 here soon, and was looking at the SPS Tactical. I did a search and found a lot of good info there, but my main question was what was the heaviest bullet that can be shot out of this one? Please correct if I'm wrong, but this is the only factory Remington in .223 with 1 in 9" twist rate? Are these still being manufactured, as I didn't see them on the Remington site? I assume that I could easily should factory loads that have a 69gr. SMK?

I don't reload yet (college student with limited funds), and wanted a versatile rifle in a small caliber. I have a .222 that my dad owned, but don't want to mess with it much due to sentimental reasons. So I figured I would swap its scope onto a new .223, and have a nice rig for not too much money invested.

I would of course put a different stock on it.

I have a 5R in 308, and like the idea of having a .223 that is set up very similarly.

Any other info that you can pass on would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Matt Colvin

Re: Looking for a 223

Both the newer version of the .223 700P and the shorter LTR have the 1:9 twist.

You should be able to stabilize a 75gr bullet with this twist. The 69SMK should be fine

Re: Looking for a 223

SPS shoots well with 69 and 62 grainers (factory loads)...

FYI - Remington made a limited run of 5Rs in 223:

This would be my "out-of-the-box" option - no immediate need to change the stock, but if you want to swap it out ASAP, you can probably get a couple of hundred for the HS it comes with towards your new stock.

Re: Looking for a 223

The VTR (tactical triangle) also has a 9 twist. In my experience, the 75 amax is pretty hit and miss with the 9 twist and the 75 vld hasn't shot decent in any of the 9 twists I've tried. The 69 smk and 70 vld both shoot nicley with the 9 twist factory offerings.

Edit: I saw that you listed factory loadings and not just factory rifles, scratch the vld's.

Re: Looking for a 223

Current production SPS Tactical in .223 are indeed 1 in 9 (the very first production were 1 in 12 I believe).

Of course a 1 in 9 will stabilize a 69 gr, but mine shoots best with a 52 gr Sierra Match King (on 26.5 gr of H335 and .020 of jump). Go figure.

Re: Looking for a 223

I have the PSS with a 26" 9 twist barrel. It would not shoot the 75 or 77s for crap. It will pretty much shoot a ragged hole with 69s though.

Have you considered an AR, lot more versatile and can shoot matches such as precision rifle, F-class, 3 gun, etc..</div></div>

First, thanks for the replies, they are all helpful!

An AR is out of my price range right now. Although I would love to have one or three.

My thought process is this. I already have a Vari-X III 6.5-20x50 on the .222 I mentioned. I also have a Seekins 20moa rail for Rem700. So if I get a SPS tactical, then add a different stock (B&C from varmint???), a set of rings, and a trigger, I ought to have a good shooter for ~$750?

Does that sound plausible?
