Hunting & Fishing looking for a place to hunt Speed goat

Re: looking for a place to hunt Speed goat

I've hunted units 9 (near Lusk) and 50 (near Saratoga) in the past two years and had good luck in each unit. I think that the animals were bigger in unit 50, but there was far more public access land in unit 9. I found the Wyoming game and fish website to be really useful in picking out places to apply for a tag-they have draw/hunt stats, maps, etc. My guess is that it's pretty tough to find a bad unit in the state, but that's from a California perspective.

First question is whether you're out for meat and a fun hunt or a trophy, as I think that the units vary pretty dramatically on that basis.

Re: looking for a place to hunt Speed goat

I was in Casper in early November. I think goat season ended the weekend before I got there. I hunted the Shirley Basin area south of Casper. I spent 2 days on that area and I promise you I seen over 700 antelope in that time period. They were like a infestation of rats. Now, Ive never shot a trophy antelope and I have no idea how to score one thru a scope, but I looked at several at 14X for a long time that looked pretty darn big horn wise.

Go to Wyoming's fish and game website. There is a ton of info on there. Look for an area with a lot of public land (some units are mostly private and access is limited), high quota numbers and high hunter success rates.

I hunted unit 91 last year with two buddies. If it wasn't for one of my buddies getting sick, we could have all limited out the first day (two of us did)
