I have been reading about some difficulties for the DIY'er when it comes to replacing triggers in both the Win 70 and Ruger 77. I have purchased the Timney 401 and 601 triggers, and am considering whether to attempt the replacements myself or take them to a gunsmith. I would appreciate constructive comments, pro or con for the DIY approach vs having a professional do it. If you suggest a professional, would you have any suggestions for someone in the North Houston area? Thank you.

First, clarify whether it's a Rem 700 or Win 70. You list "Rem 70" twice. It it's the Rem 700, changing the trigger is easy.

Regardless, if you've already bought the triggers, then install them yourself. Youtube probably has some helpful video. Take pics as you disassemble to ensure you remember how to reassemble. Have a work area that the cat won't jump on, and if you schedule the job for Sunday night during Downton Abbey, then you'll have an hour uninterrupted from your wife.

Just removed a trigger from a mod 70. Push out 2 big pins and you are done. Be careful as there are 2 coil springs under tension and a torsion spring for the bolt release. Mod 77 is even easier.

Got my new triggers from Timney today. I installed the 401 in the Win 70. There was a modification needed. I have a pre-64 action on the gun. I removed the old trigger, inserted the new. Replaced the front pin, but the rear pin and bolt retaining spring would not fit as described in the instructions. Where the hooked end of the bolt retaining spring is supposed to hook around the receiver behind the trigger assembly, it was not long enough. There was no space for the hook to fit along side the trigger assembly, either. I had to snip off the terminal part of the hook, leaving just an L shaped catch to engage the receiver and hopefully that will remain in place. I tested the rifle's function and safety integrity, and all seems to be working well. If anyone has experienced this situation or would like to share some insights, please respond. Thank you.

if you really want a hell of an aftermarket trigger look on ebay every once in a while for a canjar, no longer in production but one hell of a trigger nonetheless
