The title might be misleading but maybe not..

I started out long range shooting with a 300wsm, but stopped as it both made my shoulder sore and noticed that I was pulling and flinching a lot. I have my 308 baby now and it's a dream..

My question or problem is that I want to shoot the 300wsm as that is what i will be taking hunting with me. What can I buy or do to make it so I wont flinch with it.

I dropped to a lower powder last time i took it out shooting and i noticed a great deal less in the shock of firing it. I want to keep the wood stock on it, as its a pretty thing. I was thinking of a limbsaver 'vest' or shoulder piece and possibly a different but pad. Or is there something else I should do instead?

Re: Looking for help with some gear

Get the barrel threaded by a good gunsmith, and have a muzzle brake fitted.
A lot of light weight hunting rifles kick like a mule, there no shame in having a brake fitted.
A muzzle brake will kill the recoil,it's a no brainer.

Re: Looking for help with some gear

The only thing with going the muzzle brake route on a hunting rig is the sound level. Make sure to wear earpro out hunting if you go that route; there's plenty of guys around with permanent ear damage from their braked hunting guns.

Otherwise, I'd recommend getting a PAST recoil pad for range practice. They work extremely well and should help to gain confidence with your rifle again. Then, you can simply leave it at home for the hunt if you want.

Re: Looking for help with some gear

a) pad between stock'n shoulder. (see petey)
b) ask a gunsmith to make the stock more heavy (in some of our hunter competition you see modified stocks with removable lead placed in the stock to make them more heavy)
c) check out the load ... maybe a lighter bullet will help?

while a muzzle-brake might help, those things are awfully loud, especially for hunting.
