I'm putting together a new AR with a 20" polished s/s Wilson Combat Super Sniper .223 barrel and I like to put something on the muzzle a bit nicer than a plain Jane flash hider. It'll be punching paper and steel from a bipod at 4-600 yards so muzzle rise and quick return to target performance isn't the most important. I'm pretty much looking for something that will look good and at the same time not piss off the guys shooting next to me.

I shoot next to a BCM one which doesn’t seem to blow gas at me at all. It’s specificallly designed for team operations.

I’ve used the BCM comp. It works pretty well but doesn’t hide flash as well as the A2. It’s a decent option if you have money to burn.

I'm going to be perfectly honest, it wouldn't look cool. I'm just a hobbyist, not a serious competitor. When I buy a car I don't get the sensible sedan that gets good gas mileage and rates high on consumer reports, I get what looks good and something that I will enjoy using. I'm the same with my firearms, if I wanted the utmost in accuracy I wouldn't be building an AR, I'd have a nice bolt gun. ARs are supposed to have something lethal looking hanging off the end of the barrel. It's like an A-10 or Apache without bombs and missiles hanging underneath, it just doesn't look right. And while I like the looks of some of the brakes out there, I do most of my shooting at a public range where everyone is pretty close together and there are no walls separating the shooters. I've been there when someone shows up with an AR-10 with a brake that would look more at home on an artillery piece. I know what it's like to have to set my gun down and take a break because every time the guy next to me shoots it feels like somebody just through a hand full of rocks at me and I don't want to be that guy. If the gun gets louder, oh well, we're at a rifle range where there a things that go boom but hitting the guys next to me with muzzle blast just to look cool is a no go.
There is really only so much you can do with a muzzle device. Direct gasses to the side and they are obnoxious. The A2 looks as it does because it is effective at its job. Personally, I'd get a thread protector, an effective flash hider, a suppressor mount, or an effective (OBNOXIOUS) muzzle brake. Anything else sort of marks you as a pretentious douche nozzle...
SEI Vortex - it does a great job of flash elimination and is as quiet as you’ll get without a can. I had one on my AR before I bought a can and I was very happy with it.
I have a Strike Industries J-Comp, a Midwest Industries brake, a JP compensator, and a Miculek brake on my AR15s. They all seem to work well. Nobody has complained at the range so far. (The ranges here aren't very crowded) I go shooting with my nephew a lot and he has the J-Comp and Miculek brake on his guns and they don't bother me shooting next to him at the range. You can feel the blast a bit though.

not that I want to ruin anyone else's trip to a range , but why the lease offensive muzzle break ? I love shooting the one on my 308 and watching papers and boxes in the next booth flying off the table , I would want a larger one if it made it louder in some way . I blame my state for it's stance on no suppressors of any kind . So they must like it loud . funny enough I like loud as well .
If you've shot next to a .338 Lapua Magnum or .50 BMG with a really aggressive brake (because they need it), you would realize that you're a horrible person.
I like my YHM brake, and when not using the suppressor, just stick a blast can on. It looks cool then also!

That is what I run on my 10.5in AR pistol, greatly reduces felt concussion.
If you don't want a suppressor to thread onto the muzzle device, and are interested in a flash hider type device, check out the Strike Industries Venom Flash Hider. They look great (for a flash hider), almost eliminate almost all of the flash, and cost less than $50.
Precision Armaments EFAB or AFAB. Reasonably effective brake, hides flash, minimal concussion to you or neighbors.
I dig my closed tine Surefire Warcomp. Looks sexy, provides a little performance, and isn’t obnoxious.
The BCM Gunfighter is on the low side of "blasty". Lots of guys in my club use them and I can't say that I've ever felt a pressure wave when shooting next to them
JP 3 prong flash hider. 50 bucks from optics planet and it has been tested as the most effective in a test of about 50 flash hiders at reducing flash.
Solid flash hider with recoil mitigation. Best of all no ping, very effective in disabling washout from muzzle flash when running I2 clip-on. Tastes great and less filling.
I second the JP 3 prong. If you want to mitigate recoil you might try the JPTC-556. I shoot with a couple of guys that run them, and I have never felt they were too loud or hit me with too much gas.
Forward controls design 6315. Same performance as a fh with 25% better compensation. They make quality stuff
If the "guys" next to you can't handle the muzzle blast of a braked 223 then maybe they need to turn in their man cards.
This! I’ve never really understood guys that get worked up about “loud” guns at the range. I catch sh*t from time to time from guys when I’m shooting my 16” .308 shorty; because it’s “loud” meanwhile, the guy complaining is shooting a 16” AR and seems to completely oblivious to the fact that the brake on his 16” AR is just as loud (if not louder) than my bolt gun.
Choose the suppressor you are going to (or most likely to) buy. Use the appropriate flash hidder mount.
Both the AAC 51T and Dead Air flashhidders work incredibly well and are not obnoxious in any regard. The 51T does have the classic 3-prong ping though. It does not bother me one bit as I cannot hear it over the sound of freedom going down range.

Exactly if you're practicing with AR type rifles you should be able to shoot and stay focused regardless of noise. Nice to know that some guys wence when a blast of air comes at them but what if they were live rounds coming at them would they curl up into ball and asume the fetal position?

It's not a question of being nice or being rude. An AR is an emergency self defense tool and a good brake enhances it's capability for that purpose. If anyone wishes to be nice then tolerate the muzzle blast of that big bad 223. If it bothers you go park yourself to a braked 50 BMG for awhile and the muzzle blast of 223 will never again seem worth mentioning.

Funny.... tens of millions of rounds fired by hundreds of thousands of AR15 shooters last year...less that 1/100th of 1% fired in self defense. Maybe 1/1000th of 1%.

BTW... most all my "emergency self defense tools" are all subsonic and suppessed.

This... I, at the very least, warn anyone setting up next to me that my AR's have brakes that will be pesky... for hours.
I don't mind the other guys muzzle blast ... it is good "training" , IMHO.... however... It is also not my personal range.
The other guy that sit's next to me came to shoot his rifle ... not be subjected to my muzzle blast.
So a fair warning is the right thing to do.
Then again... I also use my turn signal when changing lanes... Lol
No. Where do you get any hint I've said anything about your rights? All I've said is your AR15 is 99.99% range toy. That is a statistical fact.
But with rights comes responsibility... (1) to be respectful / kind to other shooters (2) to NOT endanger our rights by unnecessarily pizzing off ppl who live around our shooting ranges with our wicked loud brakes.
