Looking for some advice

I recently joined a local club and started shooting with a friend there. He has gotten me interested in rimfire shooting. I have been borrowing his Kimber, but I want to get my own gun.

I am looking for something for shooting eggs @ 100 yds, silhouette, and possibly some Precision Tactical shoots. The gun needs to be capable of breaking 13-15 eggs OFF The Bench fairly consistanly @ 100 yds with premium ammo.

Been reading about Anschutz, Savage, and CZs, but I am open to just about anything.

What would you recommend?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Looking for some advice

I guess it depends on how much you want to spend and what class you want to shoot silhouette in. Silhouette has restrictions on their classes like rifle weight, comb height, trigger pull weight, and a number of other things. To me the perfect silhouette rifle is one that fits YOU perfectly, and borders on acceptable for Hunter class, so that you have the option to use it in both classes. For 100 yard egg shoots all you need is a rifle that is accurate enough to hit the eggs. Of course, unless there are restrictions in that competition as well. But you say "OFF The Bench" at eggs at 100 yards, and because that would be hell offhand, I'll assume you're actually talking about shooting FROM the bench.

I would rather have an Anschutz over anything else out there. For silhouette, a custom 1712 in a Pharr or Wooster stock is THE rifle to have but it is not necessary to a new silhouette shooter. Most anyone couldn't shoot on par with their rifle in the offhand which is why Silhouette is very beginner friendly. It's one of those sports that you can start off in with Grandpa's old 4 MOA squirrel rifle and upgrade to something that fits you better as the addiction grows.

Shooting eggs from the bench though... that just requires pure accuracy.

I would say an Anschutz is ideal, but a much cheaper alternative is going to be a CZ. If anything, start off with a CZ and if you find yourself addicted to the game, then upgrade to an Annie when your skill level dictates.

Re: Looking for some advice

A CZ will get the job done. Evrey CZ rimfire I have seen is capable out of the box in the hand of a competant shooter. Sure a 40x or an Annie are in a diffrent league but for eggs and tactical rimfire the CZ will most definately allow you to be competitive. Don't skimp on the glass no matter what rifle you decide to purchase.

Thanks for the reply. I apologize for not being clear. Yes, I meant shooting eggs FROM the bench.

Re: Looking for some advice

any of those that you suggested in the opening post should be able to be minute of egg, from the bench at 100 yards, with good ammo.

IMO in order

anschutz
cz
savage / marlin tied with marlin taking it in a sporter barrel - don't know about their VR model yet

even sako and ruger 10/22 in the mix

Sort of wished my local range would allow us to place "silly-wets". "Em look like a ton of fun!".

The only place I know that allows it is two hour ride each direction.

To the OP, I use a Savage, it does the job just fine. But so do most of the little rifles these days. The CZ would also get my vote.

Re: Looking for some advice

Thanks to those of you who have offered advice.

I spent the day shooting a CZ, and Kimber, and a Savage. Of these, I preferred the CZ. It was a 453 Varmint and shot very well. Used the Kimber and CZ to shoot in the silhouette shoot today, and had lots of fun. Man, that offhand shooting at the longer ranges is tougher than you think.

Keep the advice coming and thanks again.

Re: Looking for some advice

My shooting buddy has been working on another guy's Savage. Not sure what model, but it is new. It will shoot good groups, and then out of now where it will throw some fliers. Right now, he suspects a weak firing pin strike and is working that angle.

I really like the looks of that Savage TR, but the one my buddy is working on has me a little concerned right now.

I am down to choosing between a CZ and a Savage. I have a need for high end glass due to a serious vision impairment (see my handle).

Re: Looking for some advice

I'm having this same internal debate right now. I already have a 10/22 mannlicher that's about minute of egg but no quite and its too pretty to change, I have a henry Golden boy that is scary accurate (shoot quarters at 50 yds with the irons all day long) but it's never going to see any glass and lastly a remington model 5 (Zastava) that's pretty accurate with the right load but just refuses to feed the last round out of the clip. I'd like to try another mag but can't find one and don't want to risk screwing this one up without a backup. I can say the model 5 is a nice rifle if you can find one but I'm still looking for either a TR or maybe a CZ with the tacticool stock...
