Hello all. I've been lurking about reading for some time and thought it was time for my first post. I'm in the process of getting my 'dream gun' built. I ordered a SASS(isn) build from JP based on the LRP-07. I have to say that the experience with JP has been nothing less than exceptional. So I have a few questions about some minor details and wanted to solicit a bit of advice. The goal of this build is to be my main gun for hunting (deer and northern predators), target stuff, etc.

Twenty years ago I was quite the shot on the 1000M ranges while in the US Army Infantry and have my share of training. My goal is to have a rifle that can take full advantage of .308 and thus am looking at taking this reliably to 600-800M with some likely playing around out to 1000-1200M+. I want something that's carry-able, but not a carbine build. I went through basic training with M16A1s, so longer barrels and fixed stocks aren't a concern.

Here's my two questions:

1. I'm leaning towards an 18" barrel but have considered going 20"; what would you suggest, and why?

2. I'm installing a Bushnell HDMR Tac Elite optic with the H59 reticle and decided on a JPoint red-dot for a backup/0-100M sight. I'm also installing a Magpul PRS stock and am on the fence as to where to install it; options are on the handguard at the 1:30 position (I'm a lefty) or on top of the scope; which would you recommend, and why?

Thanks in advance for any information.

I have the JP LRP-07 with the 18" light contour barrel but I was only planning on shooting from 0-600 yards. With the 18" barrel it is very light for a .308 and I have at the moment a Swarovski Z6i scope but if you want to reach 1000 yards or more you might just want the 20" for more velocity, Also the Bushnell HDMR is a great choice, a buddy of mine has one on his OBR and loves it. As far as the stock goes I got the UBR but again I don't plan I doing alot of target shooting. I bought this rifle for combat, close quarters out to 500-600 yards so I decided not to get the Bushnell. I did get the JP short range sight for point blank shooting and works well for my purpose, I was thinking about getting into the 3-gun game one day but I live in Michigan and there are none around here. Anyways you are going to love your JP and you are right their Customer Service is about the BEST I have ever dealt with.

I would go with the 18 for sure and even consider a 16. I know several people with 16inch 308s who have taken them to 1000 and who say they are every bit as good as a longer gun out to 800. In reality, if your main goal was to shoot outside 800 you would not be getting a 308. I also know a guy who owns a18inch JP who wishes he would have gone with the 16, and plans to when he rebarrels(although, with 4800rds thru the 18 it is showing no signs of going south). If it is to be a hunting gun I would also get the dust cover option.

I just bought a 16 in for the same purposes as you. For hunting its more nimble, lighter and just easier to carry. Knights has been getting out to 1000 for quite some time now using the 16" carbine.

For me the 16 will do all I want. Also remember is not 18" oal, you have to account for the muzzlebreak length as well.

The biggest difference you will find between the 16" and the 20" at extended ranges 800+ is how well the bullet fights the wind. On a calm day they are close to the same but on a windy day the added velocity helps. But if you are really looking at shooting a lot past 750 I would look at one of the other calibers offer by JP

Anything from 16" to 20" will allow you to do what you want. The 16" is quite handy, especially for use with a suppressor.

However, if you'll be past 6-800yds more often than not I'd consider a .260 or 6.5 Creedmoor.

If you are wanting to get out the 800 I would go with the 20", since your goal is to get the full use out of a 308. If you want to do playing around out to 1200 I would look at other calibers like the 260. Will the 308 make it that far? Yes but reliably... not really.

As far as mounting options for the j-point, I would do 45 off the upper. Like this JP Rifles
If you put it out on the hand guard the risk of smashing it off is much greater.

Thanks for all of the feedback and information, this has been an extremely fascinating process of education. I really look forward to stepping up from my 5.56 into a nice custom. I also acknowledge all of the reasons for another calibre 'other than .308,' but the benefit of ammo availability and my past training on this calibre has me a bit attached to it. I do see a .300 WM or .338 in my future, but would likely be executed by the queen if I even suggested I was looking at another gun before I even received this one. ;-)
