looking to replicate a load

Re: looking to replicate a load

well, called Hornaday, and they recomended according to the lot number that i have, to try varget starting at 35.9gr and advancing to 44.9gr with a winchester large rifle primer, using brass of my choice. let me know what yall think

Re: looking to replicate a load

Pull a box and weigh the charges. Since they recommended Varget start with a duplicate charge of Varget ASSUMING that the corresponding charge is well below max. If it's anywhere near max. The. Backoff 10% and load a couple of rounds for each step leading up to the desired charge to look for pressure signs.

Chronographing the load you are trying to copy can help.

HOWEVER, there is a better way to go about this. Just run a workup with your bullet and varget. Don't worry about the Hornady recipie becuase there may be another accuracy node in the workup that your rifle likes better.

I am trying to copy FGMM becuase it's my duty load, my rifle has to stay zeroed for it AND it's better to practice with what I carry on the job. If I didn't have to use FGMM in this rifle, then I would use my workup that is a touch more accurate.

Re: looking to replicate a load

the guy said they load to max. i have not noticed any signs of pressure though...and another question. i cant find any winchester large primers anywhere for a decent price, any ideas where to look? or what would be a good substitute.

Re: looking to replicate a load

I have had a very similar experience with Hornady. I have a 308 that shoots the Hornady Match 168 HPBT into very small groups. I would never have known that except I shot a small comp where that ammo was provided.

Anyway, I had to duplicate it. I pulled a bullet and the charges weighed 44.0 gr. I called Hornady and asked what the powder was. They told me to try Varget in a range (44.0 to 46.0) like they told you. As it turns out, 45.5 gr of Varget produces exactly the same groups and POI. That is all I run in that gun now. I was told the powder they use was not Varget but similar. They said the powder they use is Hodgdon but custom ordered.

Re: looking to replicate a load

he told me the exact same thing...well as it turns out, gander mountain had exactly one brick of primers, i called them and had them hold them till the morning when i can go get em.

Re: looking to replicate a load

well, i just picked up the last winchester large rifle primers on the west side of houston. then i picked up the last 100 hornaday 155gr amax bullets at basspro. now to send it all off to dad and have him roll some for me to test out
