Suppressors Lost Tax Stamp ?

Re: Lost Tax Stamp ?

Now you got me terrified!

Re: Lost Tax Stamp ?

Next time make six photocopies. Original goes to the safe. One to the wallet. One to the shooting back pack. One to the suppressor pouch. One to each gun case that might carry a gun shot suppressed, and, one to the glove box of the truck.

Re: Lost Tax Stamp ?

Next time, scan the form and convert it to a PDF. Put the original in a safe deposit box in the bank.

Email a PDF copy to yourself at a web email site like yahoo or hotmail, and save it. That way, if your computer goes tits up, you can still access a PDF copy.

Print a copy to keep with the suppressor. If you need more copies, print them.

Call the NFA branch and request a certified copy. It takes some time to get.

Re: Lost Tax Stamp ?

+1 on many copies and the PDF. One other thing__ DO NOT go out with that suppressor to shoot and get caught without paper. They will take the suppressor-the gun-the car you transported it in, etc. Put that suppressor away until you get the copy.

You will get it all back but not until you show paper. I have a friend who went through this. He had paper-just not with him. He had to show at the magistrates office with the paper to get everything back-and he did, but it was still a pain in the ass.

I recommend 15 copies. Put 4 copies in the back pocket of your multi cam range pants.

1 copy in your Maxpedition tactical man purse.
1 copy in your most expensive discreet rifle case
1 copy in your oakley laptop case
1 reduced copy in cayote brown Deider CQD verticle for grip
1 copy in your Chris Costa autographed copy art of the carbine boxed set
1 in your Magpul ACS stock
1 copy into your Eagle Plate carrier with Molan Labe patch
1 copy in your Call of duty black ops edition Jeep wrangler glove box
1 copy in the arm pocket of your TAD Gear hoodie
1 in your mike mers style bat belt
1 under the sole in your Oakley combat boots

Thats what i started to think as i read his post. I feel like i need so many copies that if I take a shit, a copy will come out.

Just make a small wallet copy, laminate it, and dont forget your wallet.

Unless of course, your range is infested with prying dickholes who go out of their way to fuck with you because you own a suppressor. Then having more copies than they have digits is a good idea.

Otherwise, its almost a non-issue

Send a letter into the ATF requesting the copy and have a copy of the letter with you until you get your copy.

Had to go through this once before this is what ATF told me to do.

Usually takes no longer than a week for my paperwork to get to me/my dealer after the form has been approved.

Somin' is definitely up. Probably lost in the mail.

My last one never did show up. I got a certified copy, but I paid two hundred bucks for a stamp that never made it to my dealer.

Thats the USPS for you! It might or might not show up..... How does mail that is 6 hours away by car take over 15 days to get to my door? I sure as hell don't know but the USPS has found a way for sure.

Yes. The approved application received from ATF serves as evidence of registration of the NFA firearm in the owner’s name. This document must be kept available for inspection by ATF officers. <span style="font-style: italic">It is suggested that a photocopy of the approved application be carried by the owner when the weapon is being transported.</span>

I think it prudent to be certain you have a copy on hand, and if that means anywhere the suppressor may actually be, then so be it.
As long as it is an unaltered photocopy, there really shouldn't be a problem.

Re: Lost Tax Stamp ?

Found it. It was hiding in the safe place I put it so I wouldn't lose it! Figures.

Anyway, on to another quandry. Sent a form 1 and a form 4 back in Oct. 2010, in the same envelope. I got the form 1 back but no form 4. WTF?

If I had a nickle for every time that happened to me, I'd buy another suppressor!

From my totally non-scientific research and observation, forms 1 take less time than forms 4 for some reason. I don't know why, only that that seems to be the case. All my SBRs came back in WAAAAY less time than any of my suppressors on form 4.

Re: Lost Tax Stamp ?

I <span style="font-style: italic">did</span> say it was "totally non-scientific research and observation, so however "dumb" it may be, but I stand by my comment. I have had 3 SBRs make it back in < 2 months. <span style="font-weight: bold">ALL</span> 4 of may last form 4 cans took > 3 months. YMMV, but as I said, that is just <span style="font-style: italic">my</span> experience.

Re: Lost Tax Stamp ?

I have not seen form 1's clear any faster then form 4's, ever. The only forms I see going thru quickly are form 3's for dealer to dealer.

But they are sure quick to cash that check.

Form 1's and form 4's go through a different process so getting them back at the same time would be very unusual. Normally the form 1 would be later but sounds like yours showed up early.
As far as getting certified copies you have to request them in writing with your name, the serial number and model of the item on the form and the return address thats on the form. If you've changed your address you need to make sure you put both the new and the old address as one way they track the forms is by address. Sounds a bit strange but you'd be shocked at how the filing system works.....
Glad you found your form....atf doesn't always have the other copy so don't lose it again. You don't really need 500 copies. I've been playing with the NFA stuff since the 70's and in all this time I've been asked for forms once. That guy didn't actually ask for forms, he told us the guns were illegal and we showed him forms so he'd understand they weren't. Then we all had a laugh and got the reservation officer to join us in a machinegun shoot. He had a great time....

Good luck
Frank

Ah, my bad. Sorry. I saw a thread about the form 1 vs. form 4 on one of the other boards I frequent a while back that had several folks saying their forms 1 came back quicker than forms 4, but I can't seem to find it now - nor even remember which forum it was on. Academic in either event, BATFE is going to do what they are going to do at the pace they are going to do it at. They know they we have no recourse and are a captive audience to to speak.

Yeah, so much so that my last 3 were done electronically and the check was never even sent to the bank!
