Rifle Scopes Low-power variable scope for son's .22 AR?

My seven year old has really taken to shooting, and I am getting him started early on the three-gun basics: a built-up 10/22 for "long-range" shooting, a P22 for a pistol, and an MP15-22 as an AR-style rifle. I'm interested in putting a low-powered variable scope on the MP15-22 - i.e. something in the 1-5 range. He will mostly use this in the 50-100 yard range, so I don't want anything too big, too heavy, or with too much magnification.

Choices obviously range from S&B's and other high-end optics down to pure "rimfire" scopes. Given that this will be on a .22, I don't want to break the bank by any means, but I would like something that tracks well, is clear, and is reliable.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Low-power variable scope for son's .22 AR?

I can tell you how I scoped my MP15-22 - FWIW.

I bought a Redfield 2-7X33. See it here:

Then I sent the scope to Leupold (since they own Redfield)and had them adjust the parallax to 50 yards. Total cost for the scope plus parallax adjustment was about $150.

I used a one piece scope mount from Rock River:

Total cost for the mount was about $65.

All costs include shipping.

While I'm not going to put a super cheap scope on any rifle I own, seems to me that spending much more than I did does not get you much added benefit considering the limits of the MP15-22. It's a fun rifle that works very well with Federal bulk pack ammo - it's not all that accurate.

Part of my motivation here was to keep with USA products - sort of. The Rock River base is made in the USA (I asked them and they confirmed). The Redfield is full of foreign parts - but at least it's assembled in the USA.

Good luck with your scoping project.

Re: Low-power variable scope for son's .22 AR?

OK. I have considered a number of options. Some seemed too big for the relatiely short MP15-22, others seemingly had quality problems and, then there was the intangible factor that my son threw into the mix - namely, I have a Nightforce 2.5-10x32 on my .223 and he would like to approximate the look of that. So, here is what I am considering:

First, the Leatherwood 1-4x24 with Burris 30mm PEPR mount: http://swfa.com/Leatherwood-1-4x24-CMR-Tactical-30mm-Rifle-Scope-Kit-P47565.aspx

Second, the Millett 1-4x24DMS with the same mount: http://swfa.com/Millett-1-4x24-DMS-PEPR-Combo-P42148.aspx

I like the fact that these both have pretty long eye relief. Beyond that, they both appear to be pretty close in specs. Any thoughts on whether one is better than the other?

Thanks again for your help.
