I need a measurement from the back of the stock tang inlet to the butt of the stock on top where it meets the metal butt plate please. I’m trying to determine if the stock has been shortened to accept a rubber butt pad!
TIA

The measuement I have is holding the tape from the center of the rear screw hole that holds the receiver on then to the end of the buttstock NOT including the buttplate.
12.5 inches

Hope that helps.
Thanks I appreciate your help. I guess the measurement would be the same even though the stocks are from different models?

I would think so. The M40 and the police stocks are identical from what I have seen with the exception of the forearm tip contour, everything else looks the same as far as dimensions go. I don't think there were variations on LOPs ( length of pull ).
The length of pull or LOP is the distance from the middle of the trigger to the end of the gun's buttstock which on most if not all issue wood stocked rifles is the same.

On a M40 stock?
My police stock is an almost an exact fit as far as dimensions go. Without the brass pin and the forearm contour I did it would pass for an original IMO. I have seen some M40 stocks a bit on the thin side on the forearm, and some thicker. I don't think they came that way but then again from what I have recently learned the sniper program during Nam was in it's embriotic stage, lots of civilian rifle converts such as soaking/sanding off checkering etc. learn and adapt as you go gear so to speak. I think it became more of a single style rifle production issued to the troops when Remington got into the game.
Iv'e seen mine side to side with an original M40 and you would be hard pressed to find any difference except the numerical stamp on the bottom of the pistol grip of the M40.

My stock is an ebay score. Sold as an ADL. After stripping and oiling it looks pretty close
