Gunsmithing M70 replacement trigger recommendations

looking for some recommendations for replacing the trigger on my Model 70 Winchester. The rifle is not factory, but is built on a Super Grade M70 Action that was built in the mid to late 90's and has the controlled round feed bolt. At the time I had it built, I didn't have cash for a new trigger but I'm ready to replace now.

I'd keep the factory trigger. Mine is an awesome trigger after a little tuning. You will find that the M70 have a very nice and easily tunable trigger.

Agree that the M70 trigger is a masterpiece of simplicity and strength. Might try a tuned spring set?

I am very fond of the M70 trigger in its stock configuration as it has proven to be durable, consistent and easy to tune. On the M70s I have had they wore stock triggers and the current one being built will wear the stock trigger. A great tuning job and perhaps some new springs will do wonders.

With a set of stones you can tune the trigger down to 1.5-2 pounds. Probably a one hour job.

I'm going to have the smith that built the rifle look at it. The trigger is acting funny when I hold tension to one side. Like maybe it is loose? I need to work on my trigger pull to not do this, but I want set the rifle off no matter if I'm tensioning the trigger one way or not.

The M70 trigger can't be "loose", it uses cross pins. I'd guess the engagement surfaces need to be stoned flat.

I recut the angle, the sear and trigger engagement height, and surface finish to get the pull weight and feel where I wanted it.

Like what was stated above, the stock Winchester/FN trigger is a great trigger and takes simplicity to an art form. If you must swap it out, I HIGHLY recommend the Rifle Basix trigger. The RB is for all intents and purposes a stock trigger that is easier to adjust.

I agree and disagree at the same time. Assuming the trigger and sear are flat and there isn't excessive engagement then over travel and spring tension are easy to adjust. However, the standard adjustments don't address sear/trigger engagement, spring length, or spring weight.

I found on my M70 that once I reached about 3 lbs the trigger was no longer safe and that I needed to change the sear angle and the engagement length to bring the weight down and eliminate creep.

858: That may well be true. However, this is Sniper's Hide, the site for the serious tactical shooter, who have no business trying to adjust a trigger below 3 pounds. Those who have an application for a trigger lighter than that probably do need another trigger.

Well, like I said, at about 3 pounds the trigger was no longer safe. I only consider myself a "Semi-Serious Tactical Shooter" so I enjoy a 2lb trigger but I'm sure a "Serious Tactical Shooter" would take issue with an unsafe 3lb trigger.

With that said, the M70 trigger is only adjustable for over travel and trigger spring tension. Any other adjustments require removing metal.

I'd like one of those for my Model 70, but I need to confirm if it is true that the new M70s with the "MOA Trigger" won't accept the old triggers.
