A co-worker of mine has an unopened 8 pound jug of M9 Surplus powder. He bought it several years ago, and wrote "use IMR 3031 data" on the jug. I'm wondering if this powder would work for bulk .223 loads? Anyone have any info on it?

Re: M9 Surplus powder

I used some M9 powder long ago and gave it up pretty quick. It meters like gravel and hung up my thrower worse than Varget. Also, I had issues with it when it wasnt near max loads. I could shoot a round and see left over kernels of powder in the case along with the barrel if it wasnt near max load. Near max and max load were fine and accuracy was OK but it ended up being a hassle for me. I cant recall the load data I used but I think it was 3031.

I've heard it meters rough. I can get an unopened 8 pound jug for 80.00. I was thinking about using it for run and gun type stuff, not precision loads. My thought process being I started somewhere close to the minimum load and rolling with it. I'd also considered scooping each charge as opposed to using the powder measure.

I spoke to Jeff Bartlett at GI Brass about the powder (where it was originally purchased) According to him depending on the lot number the M9 powder burn rate is all over the place. This particular lot burns very closely to IMR 3031.
