I have a nightforce 5.5-22x56 bought it for my 338 lapua. I had been on it for a while and I don't get to shoot the lapua a great deal. I had been running a valdata 10x on my 308. I didn't really get into this whole first focal versus second focal argument till the other day. I was going to the local match and decided that since I had a $1700 scope on a rifle i didn't shoot that much I would swap the NF from my TRG 42 to my 308, so i did and zeroed it. Now keep in mind I have been running a straight 10x. I got it zeroed and turned it back down to about 12x or so. We only shoot out to 400yds at the local match so when my turn was up I said well I'm just going to use the reticle[ npr1] for hold over. 1st shot 250yd miss second shot 250yd miss.....WTF I said well I'll dial up the 400yd shot ....HIT second 400yd HIT. Ok dialed back to 100yd zero and held over for 330 yd target...MISS you get the idea how this went. It took me a few minutes to figure out what had happened , talk about feeling like a FN dumbass. Needless to say I now fully understand the need for a FFP. The 338 and the Nightforce are now both leaving the collections. Which leads me to the real question. I'm liquidating the 338 and nightforce to fund a new scope, and use what ever money is left to start a new build. Is there any real pros or cons to the scopes on the USO and S&B level or is it all Ford and Chevy , or more appropriatly Rolls&Bently at that level of glass.

This sounds reasonable. I really would like to have the USO 1-10x on my .308.

Germans make better scopes

except maybe this new TARS. You honestly can't go wrong with any of the high end scopes, but I have personally seen more USO scopes go back than any other high end scope. I recommend S&B to everyone with Premier being a very close second, then Hensoldt, and Nightforce. Your mileage may vary, so get behind as many as you can before making your decision.

+1 on that
If your already used to fixed 10x the 3.5-15 nsx f1 is going to be great. Since you get a little more power, a great reticle, and ffp.

Re: Made a Second Focal mistake

I'd look at the features you want as well. Zero stops, EREK knob, some of these guys have unique options.

As others mentioned, USO lets you get some custom features. Check their site out and play around with the builder. S & B has fewer options, but still gives choices for reticles and such (last I checked)

Just picked up a USO in the forums for a great price. Even used, they're all going to take big bite out of your wallet.

Re: Made a Second Focal mistake

Don't forget the new Leupolds, unless there was a turn around last i checked the mark 6 and mark 8s were very impressive.

I run a USO SN-3 have no complaints, it works. I wouldn't hesitate to run a S&B, NF F1, Premier, Hendsolt, you get the picture. Most high end optics are all very good.

Re: Made a Second Focal mistake

If you are going to spend the money in the high end scope market then get an S&B. It's got great glass, functions and tracks as it should and has great customer service if you need it. Great reticle choices and knobs as well.

I have owned and used USO, NF, Premier, Vortex, Hensoldt, etc and given the choice I would choose S&B and still have my original 5-25x that I bought used in 2006.
